How come it is "den apfel" when the apple is the accusative case?

But "den Apfel" is the accusative form: nominative would be "der Apfel"

Der Apfel ist hier - The apple is here (nominative)
Ich esse den Apfel - I eat the apple (accusative)

Ah my mistake. I was accusing "the" with "a". Thanks for the clarification!
