"Wir" vs. "Uns"/"Unser"/"Unsere"

Hello everyone,

What is the difference between "wir" and "uns" or "unser(e)"?
I suspect that "uns" etc. is used in possessive circumstances.

Thank you! AP4418

..."I suspect that "uns" etc. is used in possessive circumstances."

Sorry if anyone has already said this, and I missed it, but whilst the possessive stuff has already been covered by others, it might be worth mentioning that uns can just mean us (as in: er kommt mit uns).

You also see uns a lot with reflexive verbs; things like:

Wir bürsten uns die Haare, where the sense is closer to: “We brush ourselves the hair,” than a possessive: "We brush our hair "
(at least that's how i see it; my grasp of reflexive verbs has always been a bit dodgy )

Oh thank you! That's adds another brick to my "Uns" house! Never mind, everyone learns, you'll have your "aha!" moment some day! Good luck to you!

that was amazing thanks

exactly as you assumed. uns, unser, unsere is always used when it is about a possession. like:

Das ist unser Haus - this is our house

Das ist unsere Katze - this is our cat

Das Boot gehört uns - this boat is ours

Wir is a personal pronoun, standing in for instance for "Jane and John".

Unser etc. is a possive pronoun, preceding a noun, as 7hAu0bvY explained.

OK, thanks, that's great. Could you give me all the conjugations please?

May 2, 2018

you mean the declination?

m= unser; n= unser: f= unsere; Plural: unsere

m= unseren; n= unser; f= unsere; Plural: unsere

m= unserem; n= unserem; f= unseren; Plural: unseren

m= unseres; n= unseres; f= unserer; Plural: unserer

That's great! Thanks!

i just realized: what i gave you above is not all. according to different situations ( like noun with article or without etc.) you need a different way to decline it. here is a link with the whole table. it is in german though

In the last row (genetiv) there isn't a feminine declination. Is it supposed to be like that?

May 2, 2018

the feminine for the genetive is unserer. i forgot to put a f= before.
