Earlier this week, we announced that English from Hindi entered beta. We're excited to let you know that English from Indonesian is now in beta too!

This course is thanks to the incredible efforts by the following volunteer Incubator contributors: SuryaDalimunthe, ryanotron, reyzvolution, lepaslandas, okihita, saritaps, MThoriqMalano, arrynz, and Rifa.cicuk.

You may encounter some bugs or language errors. Please make sure to report them as you go. You'll be helping improve the course for future learners. We'll be updating the course based on all your feedback.

Bahasa menunjukkan bangsa. Ayo bergotong-royong memperbaiki pembelajaran bahasa dan kemampuan bangsa-bangsa dunia!

Thanks team! Since Indonesian uses the same alphabet as English, this course should also be quite usable for English speakers wanting to learn Indonesian.

Indonesian using latin alphabet and pronunciation similar like German/Dutch/Spanish:-) No past tense, present perfect tense, etc..No gender and no conjugation:-) Well, there's no easy language in this world, especially in advance level:-) But, you do not have to learn new alphabet at all, unlike most asian languages:-)

A few months ago, and still almost daily, the question of "How long will it take for X language to reach beta" or "How long before the x to English or reverse course is available" gets asked. I decided to try to answer that question by putting together an average time for courses.

Its in this thread https://www.duolingo.com/comment/2689526. I don't have an accurate date for a few of the older courses so I am trying to find that information. Indonesian is one of them.

Anak perempuan to indicate girl. if split that sentences anak mean child and perempuan is woman, same as anak laki-laki / anak lelaki etc, so when combine will become small lady/boy which is mean girl or boy, and adalah here mean is. xD

For the indefinite articles in eng only a / an. But Indonesian have many type. Same as Chinese also, depend what is the object.

Example a / an

Seorang (for human)

Seekor - (for animal)

Sehelai - (for cloth)

Sebatang - (for those long piece item like wood branch, pencil etc)

These are actual indefinite articles like a/an though, not 量詞? So you would say seorang perempuan (1 woman) but not 5 seorang perempuan?

For chinese ya we call 量詞, a /an for eng they call indefinite articles.

Seorang = Se + orang mean a person. Orang = person. If 5 women, we said Lima orang perempuan, which is Lima = 5 here.

Same as Lima ekor kucing = 5 cats.

Everything with Se + XXXX = mean one. Seekor, Sebiji, Sebuah, Seketul....

If want say 5 you need Split out the Se.

Ok, but FYI 量詞 (classifiers) and articles are two very different things, and according to wiki's page on them, "Articles are found in many Indo-European, Semitic, and Polynesian languages but formally are absent from some large languages of the world, such as Indonesian, Japanese, Hindi and Russian."

Ok, here I just let you know a/an is indefinite articles in eng and will replace by Se+? in Indonesian language, but I don't know what is Indonesian call, and I never mention Se+? is kind of indefinite articles.

Chinese I know we are call 量詞. May be their structure not consider same but they got the same meaning. xD

There are more than 700 local languages in Indonesia, but the national language is Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia). Bahasa Indonesia is not only understood In Indonesia , but also in other Southeast Asian Countries such as Malaysia and Brunei:-) More detail info could be found here : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indonesian_language

Yes, bahasa Indonesia is the lingua franca of Indonesia. We have sooo many local dialects here, as Hitrizie mentioned.

As someone who couldn't wait for the beta to start, hence contributed like crazy for the first few months, I wish to thank the 3 'sets' of contributors who have helped seeing this course into beta fruition. Thank you very much also for those who have thanked us here. As Rey has said, do use the course and report to us any mistakes you encounter. :)

From Language Around the Globe:

4) Indonesian probably isn't the first language that many of us think about when we consider learning a second language either, but that oversight might be misplaced. Indonesian is spoken by over 300 million people in Southeastern Asia and is said to be mutually intelligible with the languages of Malaysia and Singapore, further increasing the number of speakers with whom a learner of Indonesian could unlock communications.

Again I have to state that no language is especially easy to learn, and the language difficulty relies on too many things to make it easy quantifiable. That said, Indonesian doesn't appear to be an especially difficult language to learn by English speaker standards. With no tenses, genders, or tones, and a simple SVO word order, Indonesian instantly ranks in my opinion as being easier than many other Asian languages - most of which are famous for being especially difficult for English speakers to learn.

Not going to visit Indonesia any time soon? That's not really an issue. Indonesia's internet culture is bigger than ever! Finding people to speak to via Skype or Google Hangouts would be a snap! As English is becoming increasingly popular as a 2nd language in Indonesia and the number of speakers and foreign investors increases, finding individuals interested in language exchange has never been easier. LATG can also boast a significant Indonesian fan base, Jakarta in particular is one of the cities with the most fans on our Facebook page! Check out this infographic from www.techinasia.com for more information about Indonesia's Internet and social media growth.

Sur, Rey, great work! Gue kirim pesan lewat Monica (karena gue nggak bisa ngakses group chat Incubator), bahwa gue akan bantu ngecek dan report kalimat-kalimat yang kurang benar, nggak natural, atau false-negative di bawah. Tampaknya lumayan banyak, karena gue notice di bagian Diskusi bahkan di atas-atas aja masih ada yang disebelin. Well, it's beta though. But it's OK! We'll fix this! :)

It means the course is available to try, although there will probably be many errors to fix. Youshould still try it though and report the errors. The more reports the team gets, the beteter the course will be for everyone. Usually beta courses are only available on the website for a while to get the bugs out. Duo will add it to the apps later.

Nice one Team Indonesia. Selamat detang, Can we please do Tagalog and Malay since it's related to Indonesian? Philippines, Indonesian and Malaysia are like brothers. I suggest Tagalog for English speakers or vice versa. In Philippines we understand English but speaking English is the problem. There are millions of people who speak English in the Philippines but some who live in poverty have trouble with the English education. Can we please do Tagalog, there are some Filipinos who suggested Tagalog long time ago. I am asking for a chance Mr Luis. I am dedicated and I have a passion of teaching others a different language. If there is a Filipino team for Tagalog, I would be more than happy to help. Please email me at Joebro671@yahoo.com. I appreciate your time for reading this. Maraming salmat( Thank you so much)

I am waiting for Indonesian from English. I had hoped to finish the course before going to Indonesia this summer. I have found using the reverse course doesn't work out as well as you might think after trying that with other languages. They provide zero grammar help, very little pronunciation, and way too much English.

Studying the reverse course is not perfect, but it works. I've started 2 months ago, from zero, and I'm now able to read some simple web pages. For grammar help, it's not very hard, and if you ask questions on the forum, you may get some help. The only real problem I had, it's with the expression of the past. For pronounciation, I use a browser extension, and it's even better than Duolingo audios, and it's right in my browser, just by clicking a word. It's my Vocabu. Maybe we could help each other learning Indo?

Duolingo won't help you speaking. There was a good site called Duolingo for speaking language, but it's dead now. To write sentences, use Lang-8, better than Duolingo for this, now they killed immersion, or you can use Duolingo on the sentence forum English from Indonesian, and replying users directly in their language, Indonesian.

Any updates regarding the English to Indonesian course? I have a feeling that nothing is going on...... Perhaps just making the Beta version an official version people can start to learn.

Indonesian is a very uncomplicated language so I don't understand why it takes more than 3 years to get it done.

Thanks guys, appreciate the effort.

I just started to learn Bahasa Indonesia and I think I'll give it a try on duolingo. It might be a little hard in the beginning since I'll have to work backwards but...what can I lose really....
