Placement Test

Hello - I took the Spanish placement test and found I have a #1 and a crown next to a number of topics. Are those topics I can skip and move on to the next? The placement test says I have 22 "skills". Where do I begin? Natasha

Welcome to Duolingo!!!

You can move on to the next skill set now, or you can review the earlier skills and increase your crown levels. You can get up to crown level 5 in a skill set.

These are the most popular ways to go through the course (that I know of) but you can do it however you want to. The only rule is that you have to complete a skill (attain crown level 1) on a skill or row of skills before advancing to the next row.

Some folks like to go through the entire course getting to crown level one, then redo it to crown level 2, and so on.

Some like to do the whole course getting each skill to crown level 2 or 3 before moving on, and then go back and review skills that interest them or that they find difficult or challenging.

Some folks like to do a "tiered" approach. That's what I do. Here's a picture of what that looks like:

Where do you find the placement test?

When I first signed up for Spanish it asked me if I was a beginner or if I had some experience. If you choose that you have some experience it will take you to the "placement test".

I think you have to start fresh. Not sure if you need to start tree again or if you need a whole new sign on. When you start a new language it is offered. But not sure how to get the test without starting over if you already have a tree. Maybe make a new duolingo account and see how you do on the test.

You can skip all those topics. The placement test shows Duolingo what Spanish you already know, so you already know those topics.

Hi Natasha,

did you do it on an mobile app, e.g Android with many tapping exercises or did you use the placement test with typing on the www.duolingo.com web portal?

It is much more difficult on the web portal.

  • Try to strengthen your old (tested out 22 skills) skills from 25-50% back to 75-100% (see your SHOF progress page; currently not visible on DuoLingo!)

  • Level-up from crown level L1 for those random skills you are interested in (this probably also re-strengthens a skill, try it with e.g 75% strength if it goes back to 100%)

  • Do new lessons for recently unlocked / coloured skills to reach crown level L1 farther down in your tree (grey skills are locked).

  • The goal should be to complete the tree for all skills (crown L1) in ~1 year.
It took me about one year to complete my EN-PT tree - in parallel with Memrise - from scratch, lesson-by-lesson, so with previous skills in Spanish you might be faster.
