How to redo a skill **without** earning a crown ?

I recently began a new tree (Czech if that matters).

I am already at level 6 and earned 2 crowns on the first 6 skills although I still don't grasp the basic elements of the language.

If I redo the skills, I will get another crown, the exercise will become more difficult (as this is the purpose of the crown update) while I still don't master the basics.

Is it a way to redo a skill without gaining a crown and so, remaining at the same level, with the same exercises and same difficulty.

That was possible in the "old" version.

Of course, I can reset the tree, and begin everything again, but that's not what I want.

Since you're only 6 skills in, I think using the practice button on the side is probably best. You won't get to pick which skill it has you redo, but it should cycle through them, and the practice doesn't affect crown level. :)

This is a good suggestion, because the "Practice" button keeps up with your trouble spots, and will present you with opportunities to practice your weak areas and get stronger in them.

I agree with my fellow german trainee, It's best to use the practice button.

Another supporting the use of the practice button! I use it a bunch after each new lesson I do because it targets your weakest areas (which when just completing a new lesson the newest material is automatically your weakest so it's great review before tackling new things). Only downside is not getting to choose exactly what you practice. With only a few skills unlocked though that shouldn't be a big problem. Depending on material cycling through the skill itself again for a crown should be okay. The earliest lessons tend to not scale too greatly in difficulty. Still def recommend the practice button though.

You are right, it is a good suggestion.

I previously used the [practice] button to keep my decaying trees golden. Now that they don't decay anymore (at least not on a visible way), I completely forgot about it.

Thanks for your answer

You can choose which skill to practice when you open your duome.eu page:

https://duome.eu/Hubinou/progress/

Next to each skill, you’ll see the practice symbol. You should only get material from that particular skill and up to the level that you have already covered. You’ll get XP for your effort, but won’t progress in the tree.

That's another good suggestion. Thanks.

I only recently discovered the ".eu" website but didn't notice I could use it for reviewing the material.

I agree that the practice button that was suggested is a good idea for practicing weak skills.

If however you want to just keep repeating a single lesson in a skill (since there are usually multiple lessons in a single skill) over and over until you have it memorized, without it going to the next lesson or giving you credit towards a crown level, you can just exit out of the lesson before answering the final question/translation. This will let you then go back in and redo that specific lesson without it advancing the skill meter.

I know what you mean as I am currently struggling with the basic skills in Polish.

I noticed that if you get something wrong, it will be repeated eventually. Also, I noticed the same phrase I got wrong coming up more than once, even when I start advancing through Basics 1 lessons. In other words, I think the lessons adapt to you (please correct me if I'm wrong), as when I kept getting sentences wrong over and over, it will repeat over and over again. Also, if I keep getting things wrong, my crowns don't advance as the program knows I need to stick with it.

Anyways, I hope this is true with Czech! Best wishes on your language learning, Hobinou! :-)

do you know it gets more difficult?

I hear different things regarding this. some people like you think it increases in difficulty and request the ability to redo a lesson.

Others complain that the lessons dont get harder as you level up crowns.

Maybe it is different per language?

But I dont believe there is any way to redo the lessons with out leveling up crowns. Other than using the practice option.

Well, to put it on another way, I do not think I deserve the reward of another crown as long as I don't master the skill or level.

Hi Hubinou,

Could you relocate this discussion in the “Troubleshooting" forum? Which is the place meant for such discussion ("How Duo works?", "What is/How works this or that feature/thing?", etc.). Thx!

To relocate it (*), edit your original post then select said forum in the drop-down menu on top-left of the edition area (see here for details).

(*) /!\ please, don’t create a new one /!\

Have a look to this short guide to help you knowing where to post your (future) discussions on Duolingo’s forums.

How to redo a skill without earning a crown ?

AFAIK, it's currently not possible to take specifically a skill without earning crowns.

I think you can put /1 or /2 and so on at the end of the html for a lesson to get each part of it.

It doesn't control anything anymore.

Whatever the number you manually put there, the system will give you exercises of the next lesson for you.

Let say a skill has 4 lessons and you just reached crown-level 1. So the counter says "0/4" (for crown-level 2) and it wants you to take the first of the 4 lessons.
Then you can put whatever number you want (even a big one, I actually tested with 72367), the lesson will be about the content of the first lesson of the skill.
