Isn't the English idiom "walls have ears" without the definite article? I tried it in German without the 'Die' but it was marked wrong.

Why using "die" as it seems to be a generic statement? Could we also replace "Wände" by "Mauern" ?
My understanding is that Mauern are the types of walls outside.
Die Mauern haben Ohren is accepted.
Die Decke hat Augen.
In Turkish we say something like this: The floor has (an) ear.
Also in Arabic Language..
