New Duolingo :/
I really hate to say it, but I hate the new Duolingo. I used to practice everyday but I have barely been able to convince myself to go on since the update. Lessons are the same thing over and over and there's no substantial way to keep track of my progress. I normally don't comment on things like this but I think it's such a shame!
Many experienced users of Duolingo are disappointed in this version of the "Crowns method".

some thoughts and tips:
Unfortunately, the "test out of individual skills" feature is not available in this version of the "crown method" for crown level 1, 2, 3 and 4.
In the mean time, follow Duolingo's advice in
you don’t have to get to Level 5 right away!
We in fact recommend you don’t get to Level 5 all in one go.
Level 5 is there to show that you have practiced the words in that skill a ton and probably don’t need further practice on it for quite a while. It’s completely optional. ....
We definitely think we can do a better job of encouraging you not to binge on one skill, .....
My favourite method when every skill has at least "crown level" 1:
If the App gives too easy exercises then switch to www.duolingo.com in the browser of your phone/tablet, because there you can choose to type every word instead of tapping on the predefined word banks.
I like to do one activity in each old skill, plus an activity in the new skill(s) every day. That way, I review the old stuff and still learn new stuff. And, over time, I get more crown levels competed without boring myself. Then I do a timed practice, and see what it throws at me.
Trying to get a skill to level five before going on would bore me to death, and then I'd forget it all later.
