¿How does one say "star wars" in Klingon?
¿How does one say "star wars" in Klingon? (There should be a sensible answer, because it is not too far off in terms of lexical field...)
I stand to be corrected by the experts, but I would guess Hov noHmey.
Hov = "star". noH = "war" (as in a specific war, rather than veS, which refers in general to the concept of warfare). mey can make noH plural. The mey is not mandatory in Klingon but is used to avoid ambiguity or emphasise that something is plural.
"Star Trek", incidentally, is Hov leng. This expression in the Duolingo Klingon course.
I agree that the same observation could be made about “Star Trek”. Hov leng could well be established, but is it only Okrand’s usage that would make it canonical? Again, I’m no expert, but it seems as though using a singular attributive noun to mean “taking place among «noun»s” might be an anglicism. Do you know of Klingon examples other than Hov with a similar attributive noun usage?
I like the way you think. However, Hov leng is indeed canon, having been used by Marc Okrand, for example in translating "Star Trek: The Experience" as Hov leng: yIjeSchu' ("Star Trek: Participate completely!"), "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock" as Hov leng wej: Spock nejlu' ("Star Trek Three: Spock is searched for") and "Treknology" as Hov leng QeD ("Star Trek science").
In general, "noun_A noun_B" simply means "the noun_B pertaining to noun_A"; the exact relationship must be inferred from context, and could well include "taking place among".
Also, most Klingon nouns (including Hov) can be either singular or plural if not specified by a number or plural suffix, so Hov leng can mean "the voyage of a star", "the voyage of stars", "the voyages of a star" or "the voyages of stars".
Hi, this is the general "Duolingo" forum, and most people on Duolingo do not study Klingon. Could you please edit your original post and use the drop-down list at top left to change the topic from "Duolingo" to "Klingon"? That way it won't clutter up the general forum, and the answers you get might help others who are learning Klingon and browse through the forum looking for new info. Thanks!
