Doesn't "tartaruga" also mean "tortoise"? Or is it only "turtle"?

We do actually have a specific word for tortoise: cágado. However, it's rarely used in spoken language, but it exists xD

Both, as far as I can tell. Like schildpad in Dutch or crwban in Welsh. It seems to be a common (and, in my opinion, reasonable) generalisation.
