App update missing Strengthen Skills option?

I just upgraded to v4.0. The new interface is clean, but I miss the Strengthen Skills or Practice Weakest Skills option for folks who have completed all the lessons. I'm not keen on speed typing in a robot duel, so it seems my only choice is to repeat lessons individually.

This was said about the vocab lists and the bar charts that show progress.

The progress charts are currently being tested on 50% of the Web users, so we're in the process of bringing them back.

We're submitting an update of the iOS app to Apple today that has the option to practice weakest skills, so it should be out next week.

I have been so grateful to be among that 50%. I was tired of having to go back into timed practice and answer one question and wait for time to run out just to see the progress chart. Now when I'm done with Immersion I can just go back to the home page and refresh.

Thank you for being so responsive to users. I'm looking forward to updating the app and trying out the duel feature after you bring back the strengthen skills feature.

I am so sad that I am not among the 50%. But I am glad that you appreciate that you have the feature and hope that it is rolled out to the rest of us soon.

Thank you very much, Luis! I've been addicted to the new duel feature and have been playing it throughout the day yesterday. It's so addictive. Duolingo is really starting to become a game! And with the vocabulary list and ability to practice weak skills, the app is going to be even more epic!

I wish there was a way to request to be opted in on some options, when it’s obvious that we’d like that... I was NOT in the 50% , although it did come out very briefly, just to disappear again... I’m sure there are some other things like this in the works, of which I’m probably unaware of. I’m more than happy to be a “lab rat”, but I think it would be even better if some of these experiments were conducted on a voluntary basis..

Experiments have to choose their subjects randomly, otherwise they don't compare like with like. People who opt in to something might be different from people who don't - they might have more motivation, for example.

As always thanks for keeping us updated and being honest with us. That being said I liked this update most of all because of dueling. I am a naturally competitive person and it has helped me get back into the swing of Duolingo.

The app for duoLingo on the Amazon Appstore has this option. I can use 'Strengthen Skills' on my Kindle Fire HD. Is the duoLingo app having problems on other devices or is this something that I am not aware of? Gracias!

When? This is the main way I use DL, so you kind of made DL useless for me.

Also, while we are at it, what about the weekly progress? It seems to have gone too. Seriously, do add new features, but my all means don't remove useful ones!

Finally, I have quite a few suggestions to make for the iOS version, but I am not sure where and how to make them. I did use the feedback feature at some point, but my feedback never got acknowledged. So, did I waste my time?!

Indeed. But shouldn't the app be getting better with updates, not worse. I was really hoping to get access to the discussion threads for each question. Instead I lost the main way I use Duolingo and had it replaced by a speed typing contest on a phone : /

    https://www.duolingo.com/colin_jack

I totally agree on discussion threads, given the lack of lessons on things like grammar and irregular verbs the discussions threads for failed questions are key in teaching you why you got a question wrong. Not having added that in this release seems crazy.

    https://www.duolingo.com/bellaisadog

I agree with this comment also. When I do a new lesson, I tend to do it on the computer so I can read the discussion threads. When I practice, I used to use the ipad - now will do everything on the computer until they bring back my practice weakest skills.

Yeah, I have to say I am very perplexed that the sentence discussions still have not been implemented at this point. The duel feature is cool, but I really would have preferred to have sentence discussions since it is a feature that really does help you learn. Without it, learning is not very easy, making the ios app not very desirable to use compared to the web version.

Duolingo team please please have the discussion back on the app, I really need this, and we all really need this feature.

I agree. I'd like more time to look over my answer before the next 'challenge,' too.

    https://www.duolingo.com/beexcellent

An easy way to fix this would be to give each user a fixed amount of time to look over their answer (maybe 30 seconds like the challenges) and then press and "okay" or "next challenge" button. I've seen this in other multiplayer game apps.

    https://www.duolingo.com/Zelda43

I agree that the Strenthen Skills button needs to come back for the iPad app. I don't want to have to go to each individual module but rather have your algorithms determine my weakest skills and let me practice them to mastery. The duel is sort of fun, but definitely not relaxing because it is timed and doing it on an iPad is ridiculously slow.

I love Duolingo but I'm really sorry that I updated...

    https://www.duolingo.com/FatherFigure8

    Please fix this asap.

    https://www.duolingo.com/arismartin

Yes, there is no reason to eliminate this option unless that the purpose be other, as it's the case. They have removed this general option in order to obligate us to go into the Duel in that obsession to make DL more addictive yet. I like the duel but as an additional option.

As someone has commented, I like to analyze each sentence and in occasions to take notes of my interest. In full "battle" against someone and time, it's impossible to do it.

I'm a bit irritate because I don't like people say to me the way in which I have to make things. If you want the duel, no problem, but If you want a more peaceful way, DL must give it to you.

    https://www.duolingo.com/brittwadsworth

Please bring strengthen weak skills back! I've finished all the lessons and that is the only thing I use on the Duolingo app. The duel is fine, but doesn't really give enough time to review and learn if you make a mistake.

I agree. It will be nice to have the 'Strengthen Skills' option back on iOS mobile. I would also like to have the progress charts back quickly as well. It is frustrating to have to do some kind of lesson just to see where you are in your daily progress.

    https://www.duolingo.com/colin_jack

I love duolingo but some of the decisions about progressing the functionality seem decidedly odd. Having used duolingo on iOS quite a lot I think the main things I wanted would be:

1. Strengthen skills needed improved, it was excellent but it kept reasking me questions about a small subset of the previously taught content. 2. Still no tips and tricks functionality (available on Web but not on iOS). 3. Still no ability to access the discussion about incorrectly answered questions. 4. Grammar lessons and customised lessons for topics like numbers and irregular verbs, topics which are harder than necessary to pick up using the current sentence repetition approach.

Anyway none of these were dealt with, instead the excellent strengthen feature was removed and a new feature that seems a little superfluous because duolingo was already addictive enough.

Why not make your whole post all caps while you're at it?

:Edited my previous post for being over the top:

I didn't find his highlighting offensive. It made his post more expressive. The removal of this feature really irritated me too. Considering my usual overly passive nature, my using all caps in sympathy for colin_jack was a tad over the top. Many apologies.

Yes please bring back Practise Weak Skills

    https://www.duolingo.com/cbharkins

I agree with your observation and share your complaint. I would like another update with the Strengthen Skills option. I also cannot beat the bot in a duel because of my typing speed using only one finger.

    https://www.duolingo.com/Missdmeaner

Yes, yes, yes, please bring this back. Also I can't access anything off line any more. When I first got the app I could do it anywhere, anytime. It was great as I did most of it on the bus to/from work. Then after an app update I could no longer practice weak skills off line. Which wasn't a huge problem as I could at least move forward with new lessons (even though it didn't remember I had done them once I was back on-line). Now I can't access anything at all - not new lessons, not strengthen skills, not repeat a unit, not even the duel feature - unless I'm connented on line. What can I say, I'm the cheapskate with the minimal data plan! What gives?

    https://www.duolingo.com/publius77

Well, even if strengthen skills comes back, I definitely can't update the app unless I'm sure offline lessons will still be available. Most of my Duolingo time is during my commute on the subway, and I can't count on cell coverage. That's one of the main reasons I chose Duolingo in the first place.

Are you going to add an option to quit during a challenge against Duobot, or the option to pause when playing? Everytime someone in my house speaks to me, or if I need to answer the phone, etc, I miss a challenge question because the challenge goes on with or without me. It's getting very frustrating. (I have 5 kids...I have to stop a lot!) i would also like to see the correct answer for a little longer when I get a question incorrect. Perhaps having to hit "next" after we've reviewed the correct answer could be an option. I also miss the discussion board and the weekly/monthly/and all time progress. The weekly progress is what I use as my motivation to stick with Duolingo daily. Sorry, I'm sure I will eventually get used to the changes, but for now, I'm wishing I never updated. I do love the new challenge options, but why not just add them instead of removing everything else?
