Hebrew writing challenges

Each month there is a "writing in your target language" challenge. I have written twice in Hebrew in it and have yet to receive a correction. So I bring the challenge to you, hoping to find correctors and also others who wish to practice their Hebrew.

The rules are no use of Google translate or any other digital translation program to produce your words.

I would like to see more interaction in the Hebrew forum. Currently it is pretty sparse.

I have three challenges for you.

  1. Answer the question.

האם אתה מים?

  1. Write a sentence in Hebrew

  2. Write a paragraph in Hebrew

You may participate or correct any of the above. There is no rules of your level of ability. I challenge you to write something, even it is only one word.

I may drop a few lingots on the comments.

This seems like a great idea. Hopefully it works out.

אני לא יודעת את התשובה. 1

הגמל הלבן רץ במדבר. 2

3. את אוהבת עוגה שוקולד? מי לא אוהבים את זה. שוקולד טעים מאוד. גם עוגות אחרות הן טעימות, אבל שוקולד הכי טוב.

If I may I would like to point out some mistakes.

First of all, I can see your hebrew level is pretty good, so good job and good luck with continuing the studies!

  1. you can't say עוגה שוקולד since it is meaningless, because it is a cake of chocolate you should say עוגת שוקולד.

Some more examples:

defense wall = wall of defense = חומת מגן

goat cheese = cheese of goats = גבינת עיזים

food package (sounds a bit awkward) = package of food = חבילת אוכל

As you can see when the word ends with ה it becomes ת

  1. You wrote a statement שוקולד טעים מאוד it is correct but not used that way, when you say a statement about a general object you use זה, הן, הם

I eat tasty chocolate - אני אוכל שוקולד טעים

Chocolate is tasty - שוקולד זה טעים

Since you refer to all the chocolate in the world as a general thing in the second sentence but in the first one you refer to a specific one. Another example where I refer to a specific chocolate:

I eat this tasty chocolate - אני אוכל את השוקולד הטעים הזה

This chocolate is tasty - השוקולד הזה טעים

As you can see here i do not use זה since i do not speak about generally all the chocolate in the world but about this chocolate.

Another example:

I love beautiful models - אני אוהב דוגמניות יפות, here it is not a statement.

Models are beautiful = all models are beautiful = דוגמניות הן יפות

Men are good = all men are good = גברים הם טובים

  1. The same applies for the last sentence:

Chocolate is the best = all the chocolate in the world is the best = שוקולד זה הכי טוב

Besides that, your hebrew was perfect, I hope I helped and continue improving, the hard work is paying off!

Thanks so much! This is pretty much the first time I have attempted a paragraph in Hebrew, and online for people to check, so for you to say that other than a few problems it was perfect means a lot. Very encouraging. I do recall the lesson about the construct state, but I haven't practiced in a while. I did not know about the general/specific things, I assumed it was the same as English, so yes, you did help. Thanks for taking the time to review what I wrote :D

Thank-you y-p-s for correcting! Maybe you can correct mine too?

Thanks! I just noticed I forgot the love/like on water! But I will leave it like that. I am made of water, but it will be an interesting comprehension test!

May 23, 2018

I wondered after I saw your answer, but I also decided just to answer what I read and according to the rules, no Google :)

I wanted to make it easy, but I think I made it hard! Lol!

כן, אני אהבת מים. .1

ציפור אהבת לחם. .2

אני יונה. צבה שלה הוא לבן. אנו אוכל ירק. אני יפה ושמחה. אני אוהבת. לחם. אני לא אוהבת יין. אני שותה מים. אני את הילדי חיית מהמדר.

I hope you continue practicing Hebrew, both on duolingo and with stuff like that which I am sure helps a lot. And most importantly don't be afraid to make mistakes! That is how you learn.

Firstly, you write אהבת, I am certain you ment אוהבת with nikud: אֹהבת however in modern hebrew you will only see אהבת with the meaning of

You (male) loved/liked = אָהַבְתָּ or without nikud אהבת

You(female) loved/liked = אָהַבְתְּ or without nikud אהבת

Therefore when saying I(female) like/love you write אני אוהבת.

It is not a mistake however what you wrote is rarely used with that meaning.

Secondly, in your second sentence you write ציפור אוהבת לחם however it is like writing in English

Bird likes bread, doesn't make very sense therefore you can write:

The bird likes bread - הציפור אוהבת לחם or

Birds like bread - ציפורים אוהבות לחם

I do not know if you meant in the paragraph when you wrote:

אני יונה, צבה שלה לבן

First of all there is a spelling mistake, color = צבע

Second of all, If you meant I am a dove, my color is white then you should have written הצבע שלי and not הצבע שלה since

My/mine = שלי

Her/hers = שלה

And also when you say for example my color is white it is:

הצבע שלי הוא לבן

Since it is like:

My color is white = The color of mine is white = הצבע שלי לבן/הצבע שלי הוא לבן

I didnt understand your last sentence so maybe you can clear it up?

Remember, mistakes is how you learn, dont focus on the bad focus on the good (everything i didnt correct is 100% correct) and focus on improving, if you would like you can post your email or something and then you can send me stuff like that and ill help you happily! Continue practicing I can see you have already a good understanding.

Thank-you very much! Wrapping my head around all the genders and the writing style and spelling is difficult! I hope to continue practicing. Last sentence: I am the boy's pet.
