Great Swedish Language Shows!

Hej! Honestly, the main reason I'm learning Swedish is because I love their TV shows, especially the crime genre. They are the best! I've learned enough Swedish now that I can understand about half of what's said and it's very exciting and rewarding. I'm going to list my favorites. Please jump in with any that I've missed. Tack!

In no particular order: Bron (OK that's #1 for a reason!); Beck; Wallender; Johan Falke (with Joel Kinneman- He's a svensk!); Easy Money (also with Joel Kinneman); Arne Dahl; Spring Tide; Annika Bengtzon; Missing; Blue Eyes; Camilla Lackberg (both series); Crimes of passion (Watch ordinary people smoke like chimneys!); The Fat and the Angry; Enemy's Enemy; Hamilton (Love me some Mikel Persbrandt!!!); Talisman; Bonusfamilj (Bonus Family); Dragon Tattoo Trilogy; Thicker than Water.

And for reading material, check out 8Sidor, online nyheter, new editions on weekdays, which is great for learners.

Innan vi dör!! And no crime, but forever my favorites: all the Astrid Lindgren series, especially Vi på Saltkråkan, Emil i Lönneberga and Ronja.

Edit; as a child watching (and listening) the Astrid Lindgren stuff, made me wish to be able to understand and speak Swedish.

Tack! Innan vi dör appears to be on YouTube. I'm excited! But they only have snippets of the kids' shows that you mention.

I can watch Pippi via https://www.svtplay.se Outside Sweden you can't watch a lot, but some. And sometimes, when they repeat them on television, I can watch them for a short time. Last Christmas, it was Madicken. Last year I could see Saltkråkan. Pippi is available all year round.

I hope you know that the Bron series is partly in Danish. ;)

That's why it's so great for listening purposes also!

Absolut! That is a bit confusing, but it's entirely worth a little language confusion. It's all subtitled in English.

Where can I watch these shows? Are they on Netflix?

Bron and Beck are on Hulu, as far as I know. I think the Dragon Tattoo trilogy is currently on Netflix. You might be able to find the other titles online.

The majority (besides Bron and Beck) are on MZh Choice, which is pretty reasonable at $4.99/month. If you have Amazon Prime, it is an add-on that you pay for. Or you can just subscribe directly at their website. Bonusfamilj is on Netflix- not a crime show but a great show IMO.

My library has some swedish movies on dvd to rent. Maybe you can check your local library.

Update: Arne Dahl's 3rd season, now on MHzChoice, is terrific. Five 2 part episodes that I had to watch twice each to follow the complicated intertwined plots. Love that show.

There seems to be a fairly small pool of Swedish TV actors. I love how the same ones turn up in unexpected venues. Like "Vera." the very sweet homeless, older hippy lady in Spring Tide, is a high up Sapo person and finally outed as a mole in the last Arne Dahl episode. "Lisa" the new pregnant wife in BonusFamilj is a highly trained police on the Arne Dahl "A" Team. So many more. If you watched enough of these Swedish crime shows you know what I mean.

Yup, small country fewer actors. Same for Denmark, Netherlands (my country) etc.

Spring Tide is also great, and thanks for the heads up about a new season of Arne Dahl! Just finished the last one of season 1 on dvd from library, after I watched season 2 on svt (app).

Does anyone know, is the accent of Arto's wife (and Arto himself a bit) the "Finland-Swedish" that we learn about in this course?

Is this "Arne Dahl" viewable via the regular TV Channels (such as NPO2, 3 , VRT, Canvas ?) or some SVT-play stream ?

Hi Paul, via svt https://www.svtplay.se/arne-dahl Hope it works for you, too. You can also add the subtitles, this helps a lot. It's only season 2.

Canvas recently had Jordskott season 2. The bridge season 4 is on BBC 2 on fridays (started 3 weeks ago).

O, and on NPO2 on mondays is MODUS season 2.

In France, it is mainly ARTE channel which broadcasts Scandinavian/Nordic series. Now, they are broadcasting "Jordskott" (season 2), and before, "Tjockare än vatten", and also, "Äkta människor", "Okkupert" and "1864". "Borgen" was also a big success, and, years ago, "Riget".

I accidentally got my parents watching Bron because the premise of the first season interested them a lot. I'm very glad we watched it. I heard of Beck but haven't seen it yet. Soon I would like to watch Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in Swedish.

I also enjoyed the romantic horror movie Let the Right One In. If you enjoy movies like the Sixth Sense, Let the Right One In is a lot like that atmosphere-wise.

The fourth and final season of Bron was released and it's fantasiskt! I will check out Let the Right One In. Have you seen A Man Called Ove? Wonderful movie.

I recommend ”A man called Ove”. I actually saw it the other day. I also recommend this movie which is based on a book by the author who also wrote ”A man called Ove”

I love Ove. My library had the dvd, and I played it two times. In future, I want to read the book in Swedish (have read the book in Dutch before I saw the movie).

The only "Ove" i recall is the odd guy next door from "Solsidan" :-)

It's this one: https://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/En_man_som_heter_Ove_(film) And the writer is Fredrik Backman. The hundred year old man was a different writer, Jonas Jonason!

Update: Beck has some great NEW episodes available on MHzChoice. The great Kristofer Hivju is a new polis on Beck's team. The best part is, on this show they actually speak more slowly and I can understand them. Heh heh.

Other svenska shows worth watching: Varg Veum; Dirty Money, White Lies; Mammon ( 50 kronar to anyone who can write a clear synopsis of the plot!); Those Who Kill.

Oops! Mammon is Norwegian. But the actor playing Peter Veras plays Jarl Varg in Norsemen, which, if you haven't seen it, is a HILARIOUS send-up of Viking shows, available in English on Netflix, and in Norwegian somewhere in the world!

Just watched season one of a new show "Miss Friman's War." It is so charming, and the actors speak langsamt och tydligt! I can understand so much of it.

I didn't expect to like it as it's a costume drama and about war, only it's not about war-war, it's about independent women back when they were rare. It's on MHzChoice, a great streaming service that has all foreign (to me here in the US) shows. Many great Swedish and Norwegian crime shows.

And by the way, has anyone seen the Best Movie of All Time: Kraftidioten? (English title: In Order of Disappearance) Starring the great Stellan Skarsgard and Bruno Ganz and many favorite Norwegian actors. Jarl Varg and Orm from Norsemen have small but hilarious roles. There is not one moment in that movie that is not GREAT!

Fruken Frimans Krig is great! We could watch it on svt.se here in the Netherlands, all seasons (3 episodes per season).

And yes, they speak really tydligt so that was a great bonus, I was able to translate to my housemate (who knows some swedish words but does not know the language) about 90% of what was being said.

Just thought of this one: (no crime, bit more fairytale but dark): Jordkott ! And I love the intro theme music to the series, a mix traditional / modern violin/nyckelharpa sounding.

Thanks for the list and everyone else's comments. Lots of gems here for me :). I'll bookmark this discussion.

I've only seen:

I noticed that the Dragon Tattoo trilogy is on Netflix, so I'm going watch that one after I finish watching a telenovela.

At the moment they are releasing another episode of Vi på Saltkråkan also.

Arte-TV (France, Germany) has just broadcast "Enkelstöten". It's both funny and suspenseful.
