Maybe some of the exercises were moved to a later stage in the tree so that you officially haven’t done them yet in the new tree. You might get credit for them later.

Don’t be too upset about it. You’ll catch up quickly! Be happy that the tree was improved.

Jileha - no, I can't recover 8 months worth of work "quickly". I lost my Golden Owl, I won't be getting it back, not this year anyway;. I lost lessons, Vocabs, Crowns. This was not the way to start off a new release, by stripping people of the accomplishments they earned in the old tree. There was a better way than having to alienate people.

Perfect Answer! The point is to learn a new language and I am thankful that Duo is improving. Thank you Duo for helping me get around in a better and more capable way in the countries I visit.

My guess is new content was added.

i was at crown level 140 but now i am at crown level 109

lazywolf2 - I was at crown level 128 and now I am crown level 101 - demoralizing isn't it? And I lost Lessons I had studied, I llost Vocabulary points I had earned (Vocabs), and I lost my Golden Owl, for reaching the bottom of the tree, this made my Streakers Leader's Board entry lose the Spanish symbol, as it only displays for people that have Golden Owls that reach the bottom of their trees.

What happened?

Despite Duolingo promissed "Once you earn a crown, you get to keep it!" in
https://support.duolingo.com/hc/en-us/articles/360002253131-Crown-level-decay-and-spaced-repetition,
Duolingo's staff is still using the "skill decay procedure for the new version of the language tree" of the teaching method before the "crowns" update.

It also happened to the users of the new version of the French tree and in all the other updated trees of the language courses after the "crowns" update!

You might submit a bug report via
https://support.duolingo.com/hc/en-us/articles/204728264-How-do-I-report-a-bug-

The more people are complaining, the greater the change Duolingo's staff is going to solve this issue.

Wooow,
HelpfulDuo has changed the "help text" in a "helpful text" within a day.
Thanks a lot HelpfulDuo!

I had 103 crowns, and then after the update there were only 87

I just went from 151 to 146 in German...? Very annoying. I was pleased to have finally reached 150.

Yeah, i know how you feel. I've been slowly building my crown levels back up. Some people decided to leave duolingo, but, I decided to stay as I liked learning languages. It's taken time, but, I'm recovering slowly. My friends say - vitural awards don't matter, only learning the languages does - I can see their point. But, if awards are to encourage you - then taking them way without notice is a discouragement. Hang in there.

Thanks. It's funny the impact these virtual rewards and incentives have. In the end, I've got all the German in my head that I've earned so far, and that's what I'm here for, so that is all that counts. But I still think it's disingenuous of Duo—they want these things to work as incentives, but then they sort of punish you for changes they make...? I'm glad they're making improvements all the time, but it's a mistake to 'correct' the ratings people have achieved. Their tinkering of the learning tree does not change the many hours I have put into it. My record should reflect that. But if I can reach my goals (reading ability in these languages), then ultimately it won't matter.

I know what you mean. It was such a shock for me to lose my virtual symbols for my accomplishment, I went from studying DL languages for hours a day to just 5 minutes a day. Many people said they were going to quit over this. At least I didn't quit, as I still want to learn. But, I went back to doing Genealogy instead of languages. LOL

Because in skill sets where you once had done all the content to a certain level (say, crown level 1) there is now new content that you have not done at all. So to keep that skill set at crown level 1 would be inaccurate.

Lrtward - I disagree with you on so many levels -First of all, changing the rules or the size of the tree, should not invalidate the accomplishments that so many people put into the old tree, playing by those rules. "reseting/downgrading" user values is callous and thoughtless. Here are other reasons:--- (1) --- Old Crowns not worth new Crowns - I've taken some Tree 2 lessons - same old thing - yes more lessons - but not any different . ----- (2) ----- DL gave those virtual awards and it is counter productive, demoralizing, and cruel to take them away. ------ (3) ----- Duolingo prides it's self on thinking of ways to make people want to study more. And by stripping people of their hard fought crowns, lessons, vocabs and Golden Owls, DL have done the opposite. ------(4) ----- When a software upgrade deletes user data this is a bug. You can't delete user data - that is a no-no, this is Computer Science 101. --- (5) ---- Expendient? To disallow the accomplishments from version 1.0 to transfer to 2.0? Will this make it faster to release? Easier to code? ---- (6) ----- And since people that have already completed the tree don't lose their Golden Owls, then its too bad, so sad, for anyone else --- (7) ---- Pardon me, but, I find MODs saying that losing Crowns, Lessons learned, Vocabs, and Golden Owls, is ok, because the new tree is so superior, as hollow and not very convincing.

It is a pity, that this is not explained in the English Duolingo Help Center, because
https://support.duolingo.com/hc/en-us/articles/360002253131-Crown-level-decay-and-spaced-repetition shows:

Will my progress decay over time?
.
Once you earn a crown, you get to keep it!

pentaan, unfortunately, this is an old explantion before Spanish tree 2.0.And since the new Spanish tree has 113 skills, and the old Spanish tree had only 61 skills. What was done was to "shrink to fit" everyone's data - that meant people lost crowns, lessons, Vocabs, and Golden Owls. I have the before and after screen captures to prove it. So, you have old news, the new news, is that for the Spanish users, they indeed permanently lost Crown Levels, I personally went from 128 crowns to 101 crowns. - I think there was another way to merge the old tree and the new tree that did not include taking crowns, lessons, Vocabs and Golden Owls away from the Spanish users. I am not happy and so are others.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/MaryEllen246097

As a retired software tester, I see where someone like me could have made a difference in the way the new tree was designed and released. I never would have alowed a system that destroyed the accomplishments earned in the old system but not transfered to the new system. I wonder where the Human Learning expert was when the discussion of deleting the accomplishments on the old tree - when that design idea was being floated around. Maybe at the same time the idea that, yeah, a new crown is worth more than an old crown. Yeah, let's also do away with Golden Owls earned on the old version. And let's say people studied less lessons and earned less Vocabs, because we know the new system is so much more superior than the old system.

This is the second time in one month. When I started the Spanish tree from English 4 weeks ago, I did the placement test and got quite a few units at level 1 and since, I had progressed to level 2 everywhere but the last 10 units or so. I now have 51 units at 0, all of them in the first part of the tree, including the very basic ones. My crown level went down overnight from 125/305 to 93/565. This is just ridiculous. I will try the shortcuts in the application to speed up the recovery process.
