¿por que no "ellos leen el periodico EN los lunes"?

"El" and "los" plus a day of the week = "on" plus that day. "Trabajo el lunes" = "I work ON Monday". "I run on Tuesdays" = "Corro los martes".

"Monday" is lunes and "Mondays" is lunes (as taught by Duolingo). In Revision exercises the Hints reflect this, showing both answers as "lunes". Yet often when I type an answer, Duolingo corrects me, apparently suggesting Monday and Mondays are translated differently in Spanish. So what is the "other" translation, because I can't find it anywhere.
