There are three verbs, denken (think), gedenken (remember, commemorate/plan), nachdenken (think, reflect).

  • to think of sth/someone: Ich denke. Er dachte an sie. Wir haben nicht daran gedacht. > denken (an etwas (acc.))
  • to remember someone: Ich gedenke meines verstorbenen Onkels. Sie gedachten der Toten der letzten Kriege. Sie haben der Opfer gedacht. (This verb is rather formal and usually used in connection with official ceremonies.) > jemandes (gen.) gedenken
  • to plan: Ich gedenke, das Haus zu kaufen. (Formal) > gedenken, etwas zu tun (thanks to stepintime for adding this fourth meaning!)
  • to reflect, ponder about sth.: Ich denke nach. Er dachte über seine Antwort nach. Sie hatte nicht nachgedacht, bevor sie sich entschied. > (über etwas (acc.)) nachdenken

Small correction: "gedenken" is used with genitive (as you wrote in "Sie gedachten der Toten"), not dative.

"gedenken" can also mean "to intend to do sth.": "Ich gedenke das Haus zu kaufen." (very formal)

The first two are tenses of the same word - "to think" Ich dachte - I thought (past tense) The "te" is added to the back of the stem word "dach" for first person or "I"

Ich habe gedacht- I have thought (perfect form using "have") All perfect forms have the "ge" added to the front of the stem "dach" and the "t" added to the back, in this case all tenses Ich, du, er, wir, ihr,sie have the same ending "t"

Nachdenken is a different word with a slightly different meaning - "to think about it"

Ich habe daruber nachgedacht - I have thought about it.
