"Er sieht sich im Spiegel. "

I've successfully translated this as 'He sees himself in the mirror' and 'He looks at himself in the mirror', but these are two somewhat different things. How do you make this distinction in German?

"He sees himself in the mirror" = "Er sieht sich im Spiegel"

"He looks at himself in the mirror" = "Er sieht sich im Spiegel an", or more elegantly: "Er betrachtet sein Spiegelbild"

Other translation for the second sentence: "Er schaut sich im Spiegel an."
