Formatting Codes for Duolingo
Here are 14 formatting codes.
3. ITALICS AND BOLD
To post a picture in discussion, you will need the URL of that image:
(Also called "separator lines")
- - -
Note: Use the backtick (normally next to the 1 key) and not a quote.
9. BULLET POINTS
* Black or
- Black or
Note: Press Enter after you wrote your text, whether you want to make one, or more then one, of them below eachother.
You can also do
- - this
(Two spaces between this two stripes)
You can make these quotes (or blockquotes) longer (remember to put two spaces after the word/sentence that you want to quote): e.g.
>Bunny [two spaces]
>Rabbit [two spaces]
>Carrot [two spaces]
Note: For long sentences, always add a new > at the end of a sentence like this:
>Hello, how are you, hello, how are you, hello, how are you, hello, how are you? [two spaces]
Hello, how are you, hello, how are you, hello, how are you, hello, how are you?
11. COLORED TEXT
If you misspell the color name, don't worry, it will still give you a color, maybe just not the one you want.
You can also use this color wheel to create codes for a specific color.
For rainbow text, go to this post on how to do it.
12. LARGE TEXT
Note: 4 hashes is the largest you can go, once you get to six the text will look like this:
You can also make large text by doing
(Remember two spaces after your text)
(The two spaces basically keeps the the word or text from popping back up next to the text above it once your comment/post has been posted.)
14. A LEVEL
Notes: This only works in posts, not in comments.
Always add one space after your text and after the | in the middle.

This post teaches about EVERYTHING concerning formatting in Duolingo:
There are more formatting posts out there, these are just the ones that I used and followed.

Hello Dessert-Rose! I just want to mention that you don't have to leave the empty when linking a picture. As a matter of fact, inserting some kind of description there (yes, it will show) could be a kind gesture to visually impaired users using some device that read them the text aloud (so I heard from some excellent mod I can't remember the name of).
No, no, Dessert-Rose, don't delete, it's an addition, nothing more. It's good to know you don't have to make a description, but you can. I also appreciate your posts summing up important issues (grammar, site features…) Keep up your good work!
Alright. I said that it is optional.
Note: I tried doing it with writing in it but it doesn't change anything. The pictures look the same. Thanks!
The alt text only shows up if the URL for the picture won't load, and it will also be read with a page reader for the visually impaired.
By the way: the underlying tech is called Markdown.
So if you need to know how you can do something or why it breaks your formatting, you can google "markdown + [what you need to know]".
And in case it does something you don't want it to: You can tell it not to interpret your writings as code by writing a '\' (escaping) before the symbols that cause markdown to do something stupid.
(This also means that you have to write \\ to produce one single \)
(I just don't know why duolingo decided to use markdown. I don't think it fits the purpose well. Most of the times it just breaks the intended formatting of the innocent users by igoring their linebreaks.)
Thank you. This will definintely keep me busy! :D I'l check it out! Have a lingots for your effort!
Don't mention it! :D I got everything from other user's posts and put them together! You're welcome though!
Hello! I just put together alot of amazing formatting codes that I'm really glad you love it!
I'm not sure why I am that awesome? I don't remember breaking a record? :D Thanks though!
Aww, c'mon you've broken every record when it comes to awesomness.
All the Wolverines have.
5uper_5onic, Feels a lot like an Auschwitz greeting. Your language choice of German is very appropriate. Thank goodness my dear friend Monika has none for Duolingo. She has a way of correcting etiquette that leaves you shaking in your boots. Red was also the appropriate color choice. When I was an ESL teacher, I never used red to grade papers. Apparently in Korea during one of the wars, names written in red were in the line for execution. May be DEATH TO ALL is a joke that I am unaware of. Never fear, we will all die. That is a fact. If it is supposed to be funny, please explain it to me. Life is precious to me. So, let's be friends and find a way to enjoy the gift of life. Your friend, Catherine
