When i first learnt bezahlen on duolingo it said you didn't need to put für in the sentence, even if it has for in it. So why does this have a für and not accept it without one?

Both are correct, and I suggest you report it, if you come across it again.

"Sie bezahlen für die Getränke" and "Sie bezahlen die Getränke" are interchangeable. Normally you'd simply prefer "Sie bezahlen die Getränke". Besides that, I'd use "Sie bezahlen für die Getränke" to say that "they don't get them for free / they don't leave without paying".
