Can someone explain what 'al' is for in this sentence? Can it be removed? Can it be replaced with el.

Playing a sport is translated as "jugar + a". Such as:

Quiero jugar al baloncesto. (I want to play basketball.)

It cannot be removed, as the sentence does not work properly without it. You also cannot use "el" in replace of "al" because whenever "a + el" would be directly next to each other in a sentence, they automatically condense to "al".

Certain parts of the world will omit "a" after jugar, but that's more of a rare regional thing and does not follow what Duo is trying to teach. Unless you live somewhere where they omit this, always use jugar + a.

If you don't like something you say "no nos gusta" or "no gustamos de" (but this construction is very unusual). You don't say "yo gusto", you say "me gusta" (~ it pleases me).

Asking native Spanish speakers, they wouldn't use "al" here at all. It actually seemed quite silly to them so I'd say if you're having a conversation with a native Spanish speaking individual, don't use it. .. it's definitely not necessary :-)
