Swahili for English learners course contributor

I applied for this just short of 2 months ago and never heard back. There's only 2 contributors for this so far, and I'm honestly not trying to be rude, but after going through the course, there is a considerable number of errors and it's frustrating to new learners (I grew up speaking/formally learning both languages). Does anyone have information on the process? I don't mind if it's a rejection either, just some feedback would be nice.

Thanks for your willingness to help.

Almost no one ever hears back from Incubator applications. Simply the way it is. As it is the team has been incredibly active of late, so they might well consider themselves in no particular need of additional hands.

One thing they haven't ever dedicated much time to is answering questions in the sentence discussions. If you'd like to help learners, I'd encourage you to focus there for now. There are surely many questions wanting an authoritative answer. New ones are accessible via the Sentences tab in this forum.

I try to get to as many as I can. The sad part is so many people are expressing their desire/plan to quit because of the frustration. Plus considering I keep getting emails of late for suggestions I made last summer, I don't know...

In other news, I'm sort of fiddling with making flashcards! If you're at all interested, here's the link: https://tinycards.duolingo.com/users/machieng

As the course already has a moderator (Emilianmbassa), I believe it's up to him alone to approve or reject applications (of which there might be hundreds), not Duolingo staff. There is unfortunately nothing you can do if he simply hasn't looked at incubator applications recently (or even has no intention of ever doing so). Even if he has, and you were rejected, I'm not sure you would receive any notification of this.

I wish you the best of luck and sincerely hope you get the opportunity to fix some of the problems in the Swahili course, but, owing to the design of the incubator, there is really nothing to suggest as to how to get there quicker.

It might also be good to contact Patrick Choquette, who is in charge of the Peace Corps side of its partnership with Duolingo, according to these:

https://www.fastcompany.com/3061500/how-the-peace-corps-taught-duolingo-ukrainian

https://technical.ly/dc/2017/03/03/peace-corps-duolingo-swahili/

As far as I know, the Peace Corps partnership is behind these courses:

Swahili for English speakers

English for Ukrainian Speakers

Ukrainian for English speakers

Guarani for Spanish speakers (all the Peace Corps volunteers who have to learn Guarani already have to learn Spanish too)

For these four courses, it seems as though the Peace Corps chooses the contributors from people already in or working with the Peace Corps. Then, Duolingo accepts that team instead of sifting through applications sent directly to Duolingo.

I agree. I could apply too, but it's mostly Tanzanian Swahili. I was born in Kenya so I only speak Kenyan Swahili. Although they aren't that different, I went to Tanzania a few years back people actually struggled to understand me. Either way, audio needs to be added. Swahili is phonetic, but it is still helpful to have audio.

I would be very helpful to have a number of lessons on the difference between Kenyan and Tanzanian Swahili. So if you manage to become a contributor, feel welcome!

I really hope you are able to contribute to the Swahili course, because it badly needs improvement.

Interesting topic! I would have thought the more course content moderators/contributors the better.

I've travelled to Kenya for work many times, and was really excited about this course. But, with no audio, what's the point!?

The course could certainly do with your input and I am sure take it to the next level for us learning Swahili, reduce frustration and speed up the process.

These are two separate companies. Unless your tweet violated Twitter's terms of service, Duolingo does not have the power to have your tweet removed. (You also would have gotten an email from Twitter about this, with the ability to dispute it, if that had happened.)

And why would Duolingo have it removed, even if they could? They don't even censor their own forums, except for what violates their policies.

My mistake, I just haven't seen much of response or feedback from them, and the tweet just vanished from my feed

¯_(ツ)_/¯

It's okay. I'm not sure how it vanished, but you'd definitely be notified by Twitter if your tweet had been reported for some reason. I just wanted to make sure you (and others) knew. I don't think you had any bad intentions, but it's so easy for misinformation to spread like wildfire. You know? :)

Given that now there are no contributors in the incubator, it might be worth putting in another application in case someone from Duolingo decides to look for new folks to head up the effort (assuming you're still interested). Certainly mention your active and helpful presence in the discussion forums!

I gave it another shot, and I may have been brutally honest about the state of this course in Duolingo, so either they appreciate the honesty and accept the help, or...not LOL.
