E vs. y

Duolingo tells me that when talking about a father and his son, you say Padre e hijo. When do you use "e" for "and" and when do you use "y"?

I remember asking my Spanish speaking friend this exact question. He told me that you use "e" when the next word starts with a sound similar to "y", like "hijo".

Yes, the basic rule is behind words that start with "i" or "hi" (because the "h" isn't pronounced). However, there is an exception even to that rule. You must use "y" (not "e") behind words that start with "hie" (words never start with "ie"). For example, "nieve y hielo" "y hienas" "y hierve."

"Nieve" doesn't start with "hie" =P. But you are right. Sometimes you will hear and see people saying "y" all the time, but now you know it is a mistake even they don't.

I know that "nieve" doesn't start with "hie," it was just to go with the example, "snow and ice."

you use when something begins or ends in "i" Example : Español e Inglés.

Same with the letter "u" you can't say Yo o otro , you say "yo u otro"

If the following word begins with i- or hi-, you use "e" instead of "y", like in "padre e hijo" (Ex.: Hablo español e inglés.)

A similar rule happens with words that begin with o- and ho- and the word "o". (Sí o no vs. tigre u oso)
