The new crown system...
The new crown system gives many more levels, but there's no way to test out when you already know the material!
extremely annoying, it turns me off doing languages i am quite advanced in
When you start a language on Duolingo, you can make a placement test. But, as far as I know, after that, there are no more possibilities to "test out".
But I think that Duo is constantly evolving. Maybe this option comes back, who knows. I love doing the lessons, even if I generally know the language, because there are always tiny details that I didn't know. For me, this is a welcome opportunity to brush up my skills.
Why? Don't you like learning words like "Hola" or "Me gusta leche" or similiar phrases that you already know without study? I must say, I don't like the way they have dumbed down the program. I had maxed out the tree under the old system but was reduced to level 2 and some 3's, where I had to learn "Hola" all over again. How dumb. I agree, this change makes me not want to do Duolingo and I can see by my profile that I have been doing it since 2014. What a shame.
There are already many pre-existing discussions about the Crown System. Please scroll back in the forums a bit or do a google search to find one. The forums have experienced a lot of duplicate topic flooding and it will be a big help if everyone helps us cut back on that. For more information about it, please see this discussion.
Thank you! ^_^
Whats far worse, and the reason I no longer recommend Duolingo is the ridiculous health requirement. Half the time the voice recognition doesn't give me credit for answering a question correctly - get dinged, and as we progress the crowns get tougher and require more units to complete. I prefer to work from my iPhone, but at this rate it may take years to complete the tree. I'm at 147 crowns. Not sure if I will continue with Duolingo. This is definitely impeding the learning effort. Guys you need to fix this. Frustrated.....
I found that in the iphone app I was able to test out of some of the levels.
True. I found that the other day and tested out of two sections at once. I received a ridiculous amount of XP too - about 1,400 in one go. Something wrong somewhere.
