What about Italian??? I love that you have this feature available for other languages, people really seem to be enjoying it and learning a lot from it! But us Italian learners don't get these features at all.

Davvero, amico, a long-simmering complaint. I think at this point stories for Italian will have to be custom made, if possible, rather than translated from the cookie cutter batch created for the other languages. For a start, perhaps the macabre exercises found in some of the skills can form interesting story material (however lurid, dark or noirish).

I agree, i used to learn Italian on a different account i had but it wasn't that great. You may give the book "You Already Know Italian" by Raymond Lowry a try. Great book for leaning Italian fast, and its free. https://ebooksforfree.net/you-already-know-italian-by-raymond-lowry/

I hope they expand those because the Italian course is already shorter than some of the others like French. There are not as many total lessons.

YES! When I learn Spanish, I love popping on to stories and doing a few, but now that I'm shifting my focus onto Italian, I'm appalled to see that they aren't there! In fact, it redirects me to Spanish!

We are still working on improving Duolingo Stories, so for now we don't plan to launch other languages.

https://www.duolingo.com/Prime624

This would make sense, if Italian wasn't a top language, but based on the 2016 statistics, it is the 5th most learned language (from this: https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/16584572/Most-Learned-Languages-On-Duolingo). Almost double the learners of Portuguese. I'm sure adding one more language couldn't setback Stories that much.

https://www.duolingo.com/LorettaPresley

Why wouldn't you make them for the most learned languages first? In terms of number of learners Portuguese is less popular than Italian, but it has stories. Also, the other languages have a whole bunch of stories now--why couldn't you work on Italian before adding more and more and more to them when they already have enough? I know I shouldn't complain, considering that I'm studying all of those languages other than Portuguese, but I don't understand why it was done that way.

https://www.duolingo.com/Steph_Malpass

Hi! Thanks for your feedback. Portuguese, (along with the other Stories languages) is among the top languages that Duolingo users learn. To try to improve our products based on the needs of our users, lots of analysis goes into our user base. Here's an article that gives a better view of this: http://making.duolingo.com/which-countries-study-which-languages-and-what-can-we-learn-from-it

Ultimately, we're focusing on improving our current format, so we're not looking to expand to other languages just yet. But, as Stories grows and improves, the option to work with more languages may become available.

Yay!. I like the first of the new stories in Spanish, and I love how the stories are getting more complex in each set, and the speakers are speaking more quickly. Still wish there was a way to turn off the transcription except when wanted to check the meaning of a word or fill in the answers to one of the questions.

I think it would be nice if it was visible before starting a story how many parts it consists of. If a story has several parts I do all of those in one go, but sometimes I prefer to just do one short story.

I sincerely appreciate the effort that's gone into these stories. They provide a nice break from the lessons. The stories are all creative and provide a different platform for learning.

Some of the stories make me wonder what's going to happen. (The luminous arrows on the floor is an example.) This is wonderful because I get to learn vocabulary while being entertained. However, to be honest, one of the things I enjoy most is the hilarious bogus answers! In addition to making me laugh, they provide a genuine incentive for me to understand ALL of the answers rather than just fish for the correct one to harvest the XP. I really wish I could cite all of the stories that went above and beyond in this regard, but I didn't take notes. From now on, I'm going to make an effort to point this out when your staff is especially creative. I think this is so important that you should have an internal competition to see who can create the funniest and most stupid answers while still keeping them in context. Your team obviously has a great sense of humor and is up to the task!! I'd be happy to work as a consultant! :-)

Longer is better. I enjoy immersing myself in the store and also getting a whopping # of XP for my effort!! It also gives your team a larger palette in which to work.

I have a few suggestions to further improve an already great product. Some of the actors go a bit "over the top" with their performances. Some sound shrill. While this may be great for a slapstick environment, it is counterproductive for people who are trying to learn. It makes them more challenging to understand them. Another challenge is the actors who seem to be in a competition to finish their sentences as quickly as possible. This isn't much of a problem in the lessons. You can slow it down and hear the actor repeat the sentence more slowly. Unfortunately, the stories use an electronic means of trying to do the same thing and it's an epic fail! It results in a lot of distortion and, in many cases, does not help.

Bottom line -- I'm a loyal fan. Keep up the great work!!! I wish I could get other services for this price!!!

Personally I think the stories you already have are great. Of course there is always room for improvement, but translating a few of the best rated stories into Russian, Italian and so on would help a lot. Plus there would be different people working on other languages. So it would not affect the progress of improving other stories, would it?

Just given my first 5 star rating to one of the new French stories - Admirateur secret. Cute story (even though I guessed early on who it was) and also clever in that the story turned on the choice of words used and highlighted the difference between two verbs.

Thank you for these; I think it's a great initiative and very well produced.

Just started using the stories for German — absolutely love them! I think the format is absolutely brilliant. I've been looking for reading materials, but this is so much better. Reading + audio + interactivity? Love it.

My feedback, would also love some longer stories as well, or maybe even at some point a short novel type of thing with chapters. (I know that will likely be very far in the future, if ever!)

Also, I'm sure this has been suggested, but I would also love this on the app as well. It would be great to read these stories while commuting and whatnot.

My other suggestion would be to add more ways to review the words learned in these lessons. I feel like I learn some great words, but then they don't necessarily appear in my normal Duolingo lessons. If these learned words were added to my word bank, and I could review everything together, that would be awesome.

All in all, just loving the format, and love the overall production value. Great recordings, great stories, engaging format. Thank you, Duolingo team!

You can access them on Duolingo's mobile site!

I've been screenshotting the word lists at the end to review, but it would be really great to have an easier/gamified way to review them... But I love that Stories gives you the list of words you hovered over, now. Much nicer than having to redo the whole story.

I love the longer stories! Most of my French practice comes from reading novels in French whenever I can get my hands on them. Reading is fun, and longer stories means more details and (most-likely) more interesting plots!

These are pretty good - I just did all ten in Spanish in one day. There are some issues however: at one point, "dormir" is spelled "domir." In another instance, no word is blanked out in a "fill in the missing word" question. Please fix these so that others can have a better experience. Thanks!

Duo has made a lot of decisions in the past year or two that struck me as counterproductive or pedagogically misguided.

However, these stories are fantastic. You've done something really right and really special with these, it's impressive, and I'm grateful for all the work that's gone into them.

I definitely appreciated the longer stories in the most recent batch, although I think it's nice if you keep a mix of short ones along with the longer, multipart ones.

The only thing is... I still wish the producers, writers, actors, and so on, would get credit for all their work. It seems wrong to leave that out. Every book, every CD, every movie, always has credits. These should too.

Thank you. I love hearing real speakers rather that the text to speech automated voices. At my beginner level, I feel a sense of accomplishment when I am able to follow along with the story. The XP points add up nicely as well. A combination of lesson/drills and the Dialogs makes for a nicely rounded session which over time should lead to notable progress in language communication and comprehension, in my case in French. I appreciate these new stories so much, thank you again for this great learning tool.

Quote: YimoAwanar: I like how Spanish is the most promoted language in duolingo.

IMHO Portuguese (or French), talking about the courses from English, are the number one priority languages on DuoLingo, aren't they?

You only need to compare the available "tips and notes" from the EN-PT tree (including the updated tree) to the notes available for Spanish:

          • I counted 13 notes on the old (EN-)SP tree for skills
          • the updated SP tree (520 lessons) now has 9 "tips and notes" for skills available
          • the English-French 3.0 (A/B test) tree also has - like Portuguese - MANY available "tips and notes"

Those are not that much, especially for the more difficult grammar skills or verb tenses and could be improved.

The updated English-Spanish tree has not improved much on that (I am not learning Spanish right now on DuoLingo).

To me, this counts - especially for grammar assistance - more when I am learning my first Romance language than how many stories might be available (Spanish vs French).

Thankfully I do not have to start with Spanish as my first Romance language anymore....

The Portuguese-Spanish tree does not have many "tips and notes" either.

However, you are right that Spanish and Portuguese seem to be the main testing priority for the Duo BETA lab stories (before French), and you can also add the "Spanish Podcast" to that.

When I started Spanish, I was taken aback by the size of it and the lack of tips. The French tree has tips for almost all lessons and 78 skills. Spanish rarely has tips (and some of them are a few lines) and only 61 skills. I've been at it less than a month and already I'm at past tense, which I JUST passed in my French which I've been working on daily since I joined.

In part 4, you are forced to match monte to gets at the end. This follows from an incorrect word-tip in the story. It should be gets in (or maybe gets into).

The stories look great. But anyway to make easier and shorter stories for us beginners?

Also, can we get those stories in Mandarin too, please?

Hi! Duolingo Stories was originally created for intermediate language learners, but we are certainly looking into making easier stories now. Because we are still figuring out how to improve your experience, we won't publish stories in any other new languages for now.

I love these stories, it makes learning much more interesting although sometimes there are two answers given which I think could both apply. At the moment I have finished one block but the next one is not being released.

Hi! I'm glad Duolingo Stories is helping you. Please, feel free to share the answers that you think that are similar. We are always reviewing stories to improve them. Which set did you finish? If you finished all stories in a set, you should be able to move to the next one unless you completed the last published set. That will be Set 6 in French and German and Set 8 in Portuguese and Spanish.

After a few 'refreshing' and returning to them it moved on, thanks, to the next set. Where it allows me to comment at the end I have made some comments on some things but I need to write them down I think or I forget what the similar answers (or suggested answers) were. I don't always get that option at the end, it just goes back to the main list of stories though

Just chiming in to say I love the French stories, but can't make use of the others yet. Like some of the others here, I'm really hoping for some Italian stories. And Japanese would be great too.

My only small disappointment is learning that there is overlap between languages. If you've read the story once, you're going to remember it if you start listening in another language. They should probably be unique to each language.

But overall, they seem a success. I know you've said there are no plans to make more any time soon, but I look forward to the day you decide to do it. (And hope it's soon!)

The audio from the stories comes from voice actors, thus they are more clearly understandable than most French speakers. If you want to be able to understand French speakers you'll kinda have to get used to it, even if you struggle in the beginning.

Sometimes to be able to do something, it helps to try to overdo it. You could for example try to listen to French on Youtube at 1.25 x speed for 5 minutes / day if possible with French subtitles, that should quickly make normal speed become a lot more understandable (easy compared to trying to keep up with a faster speed).

(I do support having some speed controls though)

I've been learning French since I was 13... I'm 60 percent proficient in the language. You're not telling me anything I didn't already know. I simply pointed out that sometimes the speaker is talking much faster than the words appear on the screen. When I read it I understand it just fine.

I've been doing German with Duolingo for a couple years, and I must say I am really enjoying these stories. It's a very substantial addition to the program. There's lots of new vocabulary (which isn't in the regular Duolingo tree), and everything is integrated into a well-written and coherent narrative.

My one request would be that the vocabulary from the stories be included in the "Words" function of Duolingo. In fact, now that we're on the subject, I think that the "Words" function could use some other improvements as well. It doesn't seem to be accurately remembering which words I've recently used...
