Tenía and Tuve

Hi!

What is actually the difference between "tenía" and "tuve"?

Best Regards, Gerhard

Tenía is imperfect, and occurs in the past over a period of time, or is an habitual behavior, or sets the stage for something else that happened in the past.

Tuve is preterite, and occurs in the past with a concrete beginning and end.

Cuando tenía 1 año, tuve que aprender a caminar.
When I was one year old, I had to learn to walk.
