Would I be able to use "ganó" if he won my love in a raffle?

Accepts "Él se ganó mi amor."

I am confused here.. The answer I was given was Se ganó mi amor. I had answered Él ganó mi amor. With the DL answer, how do we know it refers to he, versus she, it, etc??

That means "He wins my love." It's not the same thing.
