Health system is going to drive me to memrise

I have four problems with the Health system.

If I make a mistake, I lose a health piece AND the progress bar goes backwards - a double whammy.

There's a saying in Italian: "sbagliando si impara" - making mistakes one learns. The Health system only allows 5 mistakes and then you're done. That has retarded my learning. I feel like I'm getting a lot less out of Duolingo.

The Health system is not on a per language basis. Since I'm working on 3 languages those 5 mistakes I can make means I can only make 1.67 mistakes per language before getting shut down.

And then the practice I can do to get more health is super basic and unrelated to whatever I just flubbed up. That doesn't help me learn from my mistakes.

I've studied languages for 30+ years. Duolingo used to work better. Now I'm seriously considering abandoning one or more of my trees and switching that study to memrise.

I've seen many, many complaints (even from paying customers). Does Duolingo even care?

Let me start by saying that I'm not a fan of health either. And let me add that I use both Memrise and Duolingo quite a bit and feel that the two sites complement each other but don't accomplish the same thing. So here are two ways that you can avoid the health issue. The first is to do DL on the web where health doesn't apply. The second is to become a PLUS member (the route I have taken). PLUS membership gets you a button that you can access from your app that let's you switch on something called "health shield". Unlimited mistakes, no loss of health. I became a PLUS member just to support Duolingo's mission but was deliriously happy when I discovered health shield.

Do you know whether the health shield is a definite feature available for all PLUS members, or whether it is on the other hand maybe only an A/B test? I avoid the health “bug” like the pest whenever I can by using the web, older app versions and/or testing out (even losing the much maligned 3 hearts won’t lock you out from a skill), but this might make me reconsider “donating” a PLUS membership. Well, this and a Finnish course. :-)

It is an A/B test, because the "Health" shield is not mentioned in the English Duolingo Help Center in

I've been meaning to try the web version from my phone. Thanks for the reminder.

Can you still get Plus membership though? I don‘t have the option to purchase it anymore, neither in the iOS App nor on the website. I‘m also no longer getting adds for the Duo Plus in the App.

I used the iOS version on my iPad 2 when it still worked - it didn't use the healthbar. Neither does the Android version.

This is the first time I use the web version (hi everyone!), and it doesn't use the health bar either. From what I understand from other people I've spoken to, only the Windows 10 version uses the health system.

But I miss the "refreshing memory" bars which the iOS version used in the past.
