Duolingo is the most popular way to learn languages in the world. Best of all, it's 100% free!

Having fun with the new material (not)

Just thought I'd wander into that big purple area of my tree again today to give it another try. That was probably my first big mistake of the day...

Thought I'd share with you how I got on with a question from the 'Vacation' unit.

Q: "Yesterday we didn't watch TV"

1st try: corrected my "Ayer no vimos la televisión" with "Ayer no vimos tele nosotros" :?

2nd try: corrected "Ayer no vimos televisión" with "Ayer no vimos tele nosotros" :/

3rd try: corrected "Ayer no miramos la televisión" with "Ayer no miramos la tele" >:|

4th try: corrected "Ayer no vimos la tele" with "Ayer no miramos la tele" ':O

5th try: I just copied their answer and went with the slang for televisión :’(

Great start to my day, thanks Duo!

(but if it puts a smile on anyone else's face today, then it was all worth it)

EDIT: I've got to say, with that unit, it all went downhill after that. If you're not a person who likes reporting suggestions, maybe give this one a miss for a few months until all the variations are added

LOL
Yes, thank you for the smile :-)

I'm still on the old tree, and now I know what to expect.
So it's basically learning new slang and rejecting the stuff that we learned earlier ?

For example :
I also read something about coche <-> carro
Now it's televisión <-> tele

I'm wondering if this will be introduced as well :
Las mujeres <--> las chicas calientes ??

Carro isn't slang. It's the term used in most of the Americas. Coche should still be accepted, of course, but it is different from tele.

Also, OP, I wonder if "Ayer no miramos televisión" would have worked. One word can throw the system off as it tries to find the closest match in the database.

coche was not accepted

Yes. I meant it should be added to the database to keep with Duolingo's goals of accepting all correct answers. It ought to be accepted.

It was odd that coche was taught initially. Coche is used in Spain where carro means "cart." In the Southern Cone, it's auto, but everywhere else, carro is used.

If you come up with the Carro one please report it with a screen shot. I reported it weeks a go after getting the picture of a car numerous times and they not accepting any other word but "carro" and they emailed me back to ask me for a screen shot, luck would have it that I never got the picture of the car again.

I don’t think it’s right that they need a screen shot of it. You would think that they could just fix it with what you are telling them without the screen shot.

I just started this 2 week ago so there’s a good chance that I will run into it. If I do, i will intentionally put in “coche” so that it will reject it and I can get a picture of it to send in so future people will be all set. I’m not positive that I will get car again because i had it about a week ago but i would image being to close to the start that i will.

Thanks. I came across it in "Travel". It would also not accept "auto" or "automóvil"! Only "carro"

Maybe they're getting too many false reports? But that doesn't make any sense to me. When you get an answer wrong, there's an option to flag/report it...

I don’t think this will help you but if it’s any consolation I will tell you how my morning started. My husband brought me up to my bed an extra large dunkin donuts hot coffee this morning like he does every morning. I was propped up in bed and drinking some of it. Apparently I fell asleep like that with coffee in hand. I know this because I woke up as the coffee was spilling all over me and my bed. Do you see where the horrific tragedy is in this story lies, don’t you? I then had no more coffee to drink. Who can start a morning with an empty styrofoam cup.

Could've been worse, the coffee could've been boiling hot ;)

(donuts, now that's special... but who brings their wife a cup of cold coffee in the morning?)

Your husband is lucky!

My wife kicks me out of bed at exactaly 6:30 so I can make her fresh waffles.

Blueberry waffles on Monday Strawberry waffles on Tuesday--you get the idea. And coffee.

I grind the beans she loves, grown on the north side of a volcano in Colombia at an elevation above 6,000 feet. For exactaly forty seven and a haff seconds, use the french press and cup it.

On a tray with the flor-de-jour I present it to her.

Unfortunately sometimes she is only semi-awake and spills her cup of coffee.

So I have to remove her nightie and wring the coffee back in her cup.

Don't tell her.

Do you go fetch it from this volcano in Columbia too? Either way, I feel there's a lot of love in this single cup of coffee

I hope you reported your correct answers. Duolingo probably wants us to recognize common shortenings of common nouns (and as someone who aspires to be able to converse in Spanish, I certainly want to be able to recognize them myself), but it should also accept the original form.

Wanting to help us and forcing us to do it their way, are two very different things

In that case, I'm very lucky that I got the sentence correct the first time. However, I do think that both ver and mirar as well as tele and televisión should all be accepted. I've had similar issues with other sentences in the new content, but accept that I'll need to report several variations at first. I'm also very grateful for those who have already done so. However, I'm only planning to do them all once right now and will wait at least a few months for these to be all corrected before doing most of them again.

For those who don't want to have to report suggestions, you can always choose to please the owl sooner rather than later.

but is the correct translation of TV (slang) televisión (not slang)?

I agree TV and Television and tele should all be accepted but is part of the issue that you are going from slang or abbreviations to more formal names?

Q: "Yesterday we didn't watch TV"

Actually you will be having even more fun!

There will be more than only one (new) skill from the updated Spanish tree bringing up the past tense too early, even you will not have learned the Past verb grammar skill before!!

I'm enjoying how rough the new ones are, they seem more real. Annoying thing is though, I'm crazy about getting everything to crown level 2, and it is taking me forever; I hadn't even completed the old units yet.
