Why wouldn't "Que esta en la caja?" work?

I wish they had native speakers who got xp or lingots for answering questions like these, or just worked for DL doing that.

SpanishDic uses the "Que hay..." form as the first interpretation. "Que esta…." is listed as the third interpretation. If you can trust on line translators then "Que esta en la caja?" should be correct.

that is what I put: "¿Qué está en la caja?" - the suggestion looks weird to me (and contains vocabulary not given before: "¿Qué existe en la caja?" - although it's not a stretch to understand "existe"...)

DL accepted: "¿Qué hay en la caja?", so perhaps estar is not the right verb here, but I don't know (and I double checked that "existe" was not among the dictionary prompts for this exercise!)

"¿Qué hay en la caja?" is "What is there in the box?" The sentence to be translated doesn't have "there" in it.

"¿Qué esta en la caja?" should be considered correct.
