"in a restaurant" is also acceptable English, and translation.

"en" is translated into multiple words in english, including "in", "at" and "on". not encouraging i know, but that´s languages for ya

A helpful way to think about it is that "a" implies movement.

For example, you would say "llego al cine" -- "I arrive at the movie theater"-- but "Estoy en el cine"-- "I am at the movie theater."

Other examples include:

Salir + a -- To leave to somewhere

Ir + a -- To go (to) somewhere

Empezar + a -- To start to (do something)

twice now i've made typos spelling restaurant (trying to speed through) "restuarant" and "restaurnat" and i lost the hearts. typo detection is definitely off here.
