One Year Streak
A one year streak today. It's really gone fast. Thanks to these Forums I've not only found Duolingo but all the other great resources out there. Extras, Destinos, News in Slow Spanish are just a few. I know loads more Spanish than I did a year ago but still feel like an absolute beginner.
Muchos gracias Duolingo.
Stick with it. After almost 2 years, I find I'm doing a lot better both listening to Spanish on the radio and reading anything written in Spanish. Weirdest of all, when I do Duolingo lessons with the 3 elementary age girls we sponsor at a Mexican orphanage, I find myself having to correct their Spanish grammar to get answers Duolingo will accept. Never expected that! My long-term goal is to keep up with them as their own Spanish improves.
It stressed me a lot. I decided not to maintain my streak anymore, it is not worth making the effort and was a headache when I had to travel or on vacations. But you know what they say...don't commit the crime if you don't want to do the time. Congrats though.
They're tv shows you can get on You Tube that have easy (well, easier) to understand Spanish. Not quite as fast as other shows.
Thanks for the correction. If you had googled "Extras" you'd have found Ricky Gervais. I don't know how much Spanish he speaks.
The first 200 is challenging. After that you realize that it is easier to forget to eat your breakfast than skip the daily language routine :)
Keep it up! Enhorabuena! Felicidades!
You are right, it dominates my life.
Enhorabuena! Duolingo is amazing! It is probably the greatest/best resource out there for learning Spanish in the most fun possible. But I daresay you never stop learning. Just continue to practice and use the language as much as possible and pretty soon you won't feel like an absolute beginner. Buena suerte! :-)
Congratulations! Just wondering, after one year of DuoLingo, would you say you would be able to have a lasting conversation in Spanish or people able to communicate with a native speaker?
No way. I can understand the written word a lot better than I can listen. Speaking is another level altogether.
Ha ha. Well that's embarrassing. Like I said, I sometimes feel like an absolute beginner.
Nice so how fluent did duolingo make you after 1 year? Out of 10 how easy can you hold a fluent conversation with someone
After one year I could have a very basic conversation in Spanish and get my needs met, maybe 3/10 for fluency which is way better than 0. Now that I am getting closer to a 2 year streak I would say 4-5/10 for conversation and higher for reading. Of course, like Dave, I am looking at Youtube videos and other ways to get some Spanish exposure. The daily Duolingo infusion keeps me from dropping it and then forgetting. Learning a language is hard work and I need all the help I can get.
