It seems Duolingo has stopped congratulating you when you level-up in a language. Can this be fixed?

I'm not so concerned about the congratulatory aspect, but I did like being informed when I reached a new level; otherwise, what's the point of having levels in the first place?

I agree on this count. It feels like there’s more focus on the crown level for each course now. I hope they don’t do away entirely with them.. it’s such a cheap and petty thing to take away, surely they can bring it back.

I was just thinking this today. Last night I went up to 17 and there was no acknowledgement at all (and I would not have known if I had not clicked on my profile for some reason). We used to be able to share on social media (I never did, but I did always take a dated screenshot of each one). I missed level 16 as well, just a day after the introduction of the crowns (another reason I was not so happy with those).

Apparently now, "leveling up" is getting a new crown (even if it is ridiculously easy as it is (can be) in the new PT tree. We get congrats for those, and 2 lingots each time.

Why can we not have both? It is not like they cost anything to give. But they are like getting the gold and silver stars in kindergarten. We miss them!

My thoughts exactly! I leveled up from 17 to 19 in portuguese, kept waiting for the congrats, but i never knew I leveled up. That's another thing, for some reason it's showing my level is 15 on forums.

That is a weird glitch. Maybe take screenshots of where it is showing up as 19 and where as 15 and take to the Troubleshooting/Bug Reporting?

Yeah, seriously working! You went from level 15 (I saw it with my own eyes) to 19, to 20, and now 21 in just one day. Remarkable!

Have you been doing anything else in your life, or is this part of the glitch too? =]

I agree, I see value in the Crowns, but leveling up is ultimately more "rewarding" from a gamification standpoint (which is their big angle here).

Getting a crown doesn't feel rewarding because I get one almost every day. A new level though feels like you've got somewhere. (I know it shouldn't matter but it does).

https://www.duolingo.com/Yorick848729

It shouldn't feel like you've gotten anywhere unless you know that you have learned something, and that it is in active memory--can be used in a conversation, or whilst reading a book in that language. This is easy for me to test as I am actually living in Romania at the moment.

Naturally, you are right; however, many of us who rarely get to test our learned knowledge in person, we rely on more symbolic achievements...

Honestly though, the most rewarding feeling I get is being able to read a book in Esperanto. It's a nice feeling picking up a book and realizing "I know how to read this!"

https://www.duolingo.com/Yorick848729

Thus the reason for me to have placed the word book in there. Also, watch movies, with the advent of youtube and Amazon, there are countless opportunities to hear the spoken languages from afar. But I do feel that I am very lucky to have an opportunity to be around the entire culture in real life.

Hitting level 25 and not even getting a little nod or a "well done" from the stupid owl really felt like a low blow. Yes, the achievement is the same regardless, I know, but still.

The owl has become jaded in it's old age. It doesn't get excited about people leveling up anymore.

Fortunately, I still think it's a great achievement; so congrats from me!

I miss it too. I use the duome.eu web pages to track this and other features missing since the "crowns" update. Duome doesn't have a notification, but one can easily see how many XP are needed to level up for each language on a single screen without scrolling.

I will add my voice to this too, I think that being reminded/congratulated when you level up is a really good motivator; there was no need to ditch it when introducing the crowns. For example, I finally reached level 25 on something today and there was nothing, I even logged on to my PC to pass the threshold just in case it was only the app that had changed.

I never even know what level I am until I see it next to my name on the forums. Seems weird not to give us a heads up that we've gone up a level, but...what can you do? They've made a lot of odd changes over the last few months.

Have you tried both app and pc versions? I hear the fanfares going off on pc for things but not sure about mobile. I actually just leveled up on mobile but the volume was low so I didn't notice anything, and honestly don't really know what I'm looking for. Remind me, what exactly happened before, and what has changed? is it a sound? or a big congrats message, gems? all of the above? Notice people talk about the changes, that I never really noticed. I must be oblivious. Only thing I noticed was the new test out feature key on individual lessons on mobile. I have been using duolingo since last summer. 1 thing odd happened on mobile for me months back tho, when you have the option to watch an ad to open another chest, the app would freeze on me after the ad, I would get nada. this happened I dunno... maybe 8, 10 times haha, so I quit going for the extra chest. 1 day I opened the app and it seemed to remember all the chests it owed me lol. I felt like....

If I received a puppy every time I leveled up I'd be swimming in dog poo by now. 30 or 40 dogs! :)

And there are some people on here who have level 25 in 5 or 6 languages... they would have a whole army of dogs.
