New Feature: Earn XP for practicing Duolingo words in Tinycards on web & Android!
The Tinycards team is running an experiment on web and Android that lets you earn XP when you study flashcard decks from Duolingo.
The goal is to give you credit for studying your Duolingo words whether you study them in Duolingo or in Tinycards. This also means that if you work on Duolingo stuff in Tinycards it can help you keep your streak going in Duolingo.
If our experiment is successful, we’ll be rolling it out to all web and Android users first, then to iOS users soon after that.
Stay tuned! And if you haven't already tried Tinycards, you can check it out at tinycards.duolingo.com.
EDIT: Good news - this experiment has been a big success! We will be launching this feature to all web and Android users today (July 10, 2018). We also plan to bring this feature to iOS sometime in the next couple months. When we do, I'll post an update here!
This is great! I actually stopped using Tinycards because it did not give me XP credit...
Thanks Duolingo! And thanks, Justin, for announcing the news!
Seems like Tinycards stopped awarding XPs altogether, on any platform (I tried PC and Android). That would be sad if it was meant to stay, hopefully they'll roll this change back.
I just notice that Tinycards stopped awarding XPS two or three days ago.
I noticed that there are no longer points for TinyCards. So sad.
How do people rack up 100s of points in minutes?
Have you removed this feature now? I use Tiny Cards every day. I appreciate the DuoLingo Experience points. Has this ended?
This sounds pretty neat!
Another feature I would like to see someday is the ability to upload audio for each fact on a card within a TinyCards deck along with text/image. This would be extremely useful for covering less-studied languages and languages that have no TTS program available on TinyCards.
It would also be extraordinarily useful for covering endangered languages, which make up an overwhelming majority of the TinyCards decks I curate, and an overwhelming majority of languages of that majority have very difficult sounds to replicate without hearing it first, making audio an absolute must for them.
Thanks for this feature! It's good to see Team TinyCards making announcements on the forum.
This is a great idea! I can totally see my colleague who teaches music using this feature to add sounds and notes in lieu of words (e.g. name this instrument / what note is this).
I would like to give 5XP or something like this per lesson, because it will be far more easier to farm XP on Tinycards.
Thank you for your feedback! Part of the experiment is that we're testing how much XP per Tinycards lesson is the right amount, so different people will see different amounts of XP (and some people won't see XP at all until we launch to 100% of users).
Make the award proportional. If the lesson is short then 1XP is more than enough. If 5XP is too much, then 3 or 4XP might suffice.
Web and android users get 5 Duolingo xp per tinycard lesson or practice.
When I used tiny cards for about a day it stopped giving xp... How do I solve this issue?
I'm going to approach from a different perspective and say that removing this feature tips the scales of usability more towards Anki and other flashcard apps that gamify language learning. Speaking for myself I definitely used TinyCards a lot with both the Duolingo and non-Duolingo decks and as I've said before there are several features, enhancements, and bug fixes that need to be added to TinyCards. TinyCards should work still interface with the core Duolingo coursework, otherwise why have a flashcard app at all? The "remainder decks", for instance are the result of some arbitrary card number limit which Anki does not have. Seems to me that fixing the remainder deck issues and maybe adding an XP Cap for completed decks is a better way to go than removing XP earning all together. Furthermore, I really hope they will start to support user-uploaded audio and content from decks in all languages, not just the ones Duolingo has created.
TL,DR: Expansion is the way to go here. Not contraction.
I make my own Dutch decks. Which decks do you get XP for? Are there official Duolingo decks for each language?
Hi! Initially, you'll only get XP for official Duolingo decks. In the coming months, we plan to work on making more official Duolingo decks for more languages and on making it possible to earn Duolingo XP for user-created decks in your learning language. That's a little further out, though.
I have been making decks of vocab for Klingon that closely track the Duolingo course (I have 15 sets so far that extend to the last checkpoint). They have been attracting users and there don't seem to be many alternatives (at least so far). Could you please let "Team Tinycards" know that I would be happy to transfer them to Duolingo to offer as official decks if doing so would enable myself and the other users to gain exp for using them.
Anyway, Duo knows how to reach me if interested.
That's really cool, Mike! Let me talk to the team and see if that's something we can do in the near term or whether it's best to wait until we can offer XP for user-created decks like yours.
@Justin879544 Is there any plans to update the currents decks to the new trees, respectfully?
Please do this! I can vouch for Michael's decks. I have been using them from the start and they are very helpful!
Happy to hear it, Dave, thanks! :-)
'echletHomwIj DaparHa' 'ej Dalo' 'e' vIQoymo' jIQuchqu'! qatlho'! (which I think means, "I am very happy to hear that you like and use my cards. Thanks!")
"In the coming months, we plan to work on making more official Duolingo decks for more languages..." ~Justin879544
Yeah... I've been using @Darbz 's excellent (and complete as far as I can tell) Norwegian deck, but since it's not "official", I don't get XP for studying it :P :-(
Great news !!!! A lot of people have been waiting for this. Thank you to the team for making it happen ! :D
Please diversify the exercises because the practice become pretty monotonous very soon
I was getting points for Tinycards practice, but today it's not transferring over to XP on my duolingo :( Wondering why? (I've tried signing out on both and restarted my computer)
The only way I know for now to get credit is. Delete Tinycards app, don’t worry it won’t delete your progress. Then use safari to go to the tinycards website and save it to your home screen. Now when you click on the shortcut you will earn xp. It’s not perfect as you may need to scroll a bit to see everything. But it works. Hope that helps.
Use the following instructions to add Tinycards to your phone’s home screen: https://theappfactor.com/bookmark-website-ios-home-screen/
This is good, will give us more motivation to keep studying with the tinycards.
I really like using Tiny Cards to support what I’m learning in Duolingo. It’s good review and a nice change of pace. I think 5 XP is just right. If it gave me fewer XP, I probably wouldn't be as inclined to use it when pressed for time like I do now. I’m looking forward to this integrating with the apps and possible syncing with our weak works in Duolingo. Thank you!
To take it a step further, I don't see how you can learn anything on Duo without using Tinycards as well. If you're not learning vocab first on Tinycards, then what? You're using the drop-downs to complete Duo sentences? That is not a good way to learn. You need the vocabulary first, then make sentences.
where this gone? its disappeared today 06/06/19 from stories - no more completing a story then consolidating the vocab on tiny cards
I'm VERY disappointed you can no longer get XP from Tinycards... :( Why is it stopped? I wish it would be back!!!
Always used tinycards when I had an extra minute but not enough time for duolingo lesson. Disappointed to see they aren't linked anymore.
I actually got the XP, my only complaint is that the Spanish tree has been updated and the decks from the official set don't match the tree anymore...
I just posted something about this on another thread a few minutes ago, then saw this posting after the fact (also please excuse my yelling but...) THIS IS SO EXCITING!!!!!
Oh my gosh... YESSSS!! I got so excited when I saw the title of this thread! While I love using Tinycards, I've stopped for some time, but now that we'll get to earn XP for studying words from Duo, I feel more motivated :)
Are you going to update the French deck? It has been introduced an improved tree on Duolingo, but the deck has not changed to correspond.
Hi there, Hope all is well. Love the work you do. I got the new tree update for Spanish and I noticed that the new tree update wasn't applied to my Tiny Cards content. Is this a bug or something that I did wrong on my part, respectfully? Kind regard, George
I really wish I'd known about this a couple hours ago. I'm in a progressive XP challenge, and today's goal will be impossible for me to meet. But I'd still like to try. But I've already done my Spanish TinyCards on the computer.
I tried out a deck, and I am in the test group, so I can get 2XP per deck (it's not much toward that challenge, but every little bit helps). But where do I go to report problems with it?
Finally! This is a good idea because it gets people to actually use Tinycards!
"This is great! I actually stopped using Tinycards because it did not give me XP credit...
Thanks Duolingo! And thanks, Justin, for announcing the news!" @SammyHungryBear. You just hit the nail smack on the head!
By the way, I really like your cat, I have a cat too - her name is Gracie.
That's great news. I really hope the test goes well and Duo makes more official sets. It would be so helpful for the Polish course I just started.
So I guess only for spanish, french, german and portuguese? And what about stories in other languages(norwegian)?
Is it possible to synchronize how well I know the words from duo to tinycards? The practice button on tinycards only uses the vocabulary that I have previously unlocked on tinycards (which in my case isn't a lot because I didn't use tinycards). It's kind of boring to let tinycards introduce vocabulary to me that I already know. It would be much better if I could train the words that according to duo are not at 100% (similar to the word list).
You are very right. It is hours of waste (possibly) to be quized by words you already know well. But many of us have weak or moderate vocabulary which needs renewal. Otherwise we wouldn't come here to practice languages.
I think independently of how well one knows a language, synchronizing would be helpful. Because I think the number of people, who really want to be quizzed on a man, a woman, a girl, a boy and an apple before getting to the vocabulary they are having a hard time with, is rather small.
Keeping my fingers crossed
Yes! Having vocabulary levels linked between Duolingo and Tinycards so that working in one would affect the other would make Tinycards very much more effective. Sadly, it doesn't sound promising based on previous posts, e.g. https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/19243006
That's why I quit using TinyCards. I had originally thought that it would be a good way to upgrade my vocabulary skills, but I kept being quizzed on Basics 1.
This needs more improvement. It is so easy to get trapped practising same words.
Have you given any thought to using volunteer contributors to build Tinycard decks in a similar way to how the trees are built in Duolingo? As you can see from the other comments, there is a lot of desire not only to have Tinycards decks for Duolingo courses, but also to build them.
Alternatively, having a way to collaborate on decks would be very helpful so that those of us building decks don't work at cross-purposes.
Hi, David! Apologies for the delayed response. We're exploring a number of ways to make it easier for volunteers and users in general to create and share great decks in Tinycards, but those ideas are in their early stages, so there's nothing in the immediate pipeline that we expect to see changes on in the next couple months.
I bought some books "Grammar Drills" and "Verb Drills" and rather than just write the answer "once" in a workbook, I am creating TinyDecks in a set so I can practice them all again using Spaced Repetition - it takes a long time to enter them all (including figuring out the best format) but even just doing that, I feel more fluent already - it is all part of the learning process
Hello again! Thank you so much for all the detailed feedback in this thread. It sounds like a lot of people are interested in:
1) Using Tinycards for more languages than those that currently have "courses" in Tinycards, and 2) Tying the cards you see in Tinycards more closely to your progress (and your current course version) in Duolingo.
That's super helpful feedback!
As it happens, we have some interesting ideas in the works that we think should help with both of these needs. I can't share the details at the moment, but I want you to know that we're working on this, so stay tuned for more news in the coming weeks!
I am getting XP for tiny cards which is nice. However, I can no longer tell if the category is complete by looking at the gold bar! I like to keep them all complete daily. Now even the I complete the cards, the gold bar doesn't go to the end. Can this be resolved?
Do you use the practice button? I have also a similar problem but I am getting quized with same cards again and again. I have reported this.
Thanks for this valuable addition to our Duolingo experience.
It would work best if the decks were aligned to the respective Duolingo courses. For example, the Russian deck seems to be misaligned with the current tree (sometimes I'm presented with words I have no recollection of seeing in the corresponding Duolingo lesson), and there are some small mistakes hidden here and there.
If these issues are corrected, then this is going to be super great :-)
Brilliant - I definitely use TinyCards alongside my Duolingo lessons to reinforce the vocabulary - thank you
A couple notes and feed back....
Having TinyCards is a great tool to use to learn and reinforce vocabulary. Earning XP is also great and will encourage learners to try and use the service.
I think 5xp may be a little excessive, 2xp should provide enough reward.
I normally use Tinycards on my Iphone, but logged into the desktop version today to see if I got XP and I did. At this point I noticed an error. When I practiced the Spanish Places Level is reduced my strength bar even though all the sub category cards were full. When I went back in to the Iphone app, all my levels were full.
I look forward to the new tree and vocabulary being aligned with tiny cards, and would even volunteer some time to help with the transition.
It would be great if the word strengths and weaknesses communicated back and forth between Duolingo and tiny cards... but i see that as being less of a priority.
Focus should be placed on updating the vocabulary to new trees and adding more languages.
Thank you for all the work that you and the rest of the Duolingo team do. It has been a tremendous value to me as I work to learn a new language.
The bar being "less than full" when all the cards are full is annoying - but I've heard different stories all over, including someone suggesting it is a sync issue when using two different platforms
I HAVE been able to push the bar closer to "full" by continually re-practicing the deck, so perhaps it is all by design - but I agree, I really liked it showing "full" so I could quickly scan down the list to see the ones I need to refresh
Hello! Thanks for flagging this - we've identified a bug that's keeping those strength bars from filling up completely on web and on Android, and we're working to get a fix out ASAP.
I much appreciate the XP for practicing but far more important is to have updated courses to match the new course trees being made available.
My English Spanish course has been upgraded today but i need a revised Tinycards course to be available to learn the new vocabulary please.
When will this be done please?
As a counter to other comments, I felt the 5 XP was just right. I know it will probably all be done according to metrics, lol, but there was typing involved, etc. If it gave me fewer XP, I probably wouldn't use it. But 10 XP is too much. I personally think you hit the mail on the head, especially for more advanced levels.
Hi, Donna! Currently, you would only earn XP for studying an official Duolingo deck. If you're not earning XP for a deck that you think should be eligible, could you post a link to the deck here so we can check it out? Thanks!
Also, double-check to make sure you're logged in to the same account in Duolingo and in Tinycards. Sometimes people get confused and end up with two separate accounts.
Thanks for your reply. I just checked: 1. I'm logged in to both Duolingo and Tinycards under the same username, and 2. I do earn XP if I do Tinycards on my laptop but not if I use my Android phone (though I was successfully accumulating XP via Android in July). Unfortunately for me, I mostly use my phone!
Huh! Could you send me a link to the deck you're practicing, so I can make sure it's eligible for Duolingo XP?
Hello again! My apologies for the delayed response. I'm afraid I'm not able to see any difference on my end between web and Android - I'm earning XP for both when I practice that deck. Are you still unable to earn XP for that deck on Android? Are you able to earn XP for any other decks on Android?
Hi Justin Slightly off topic but I and several others have asked when the Tinycards courses will be revised to match the new course content. The Duolingo courses in Tinycards are much less helpful with the skills not matching. I have yet to see a response to know when this will be dealt with.
Hi Justin, forgive me if this has appeared in another thread before, but have you got rid of the feature that allows you to export vocabulary from Duolingo Stories to Tinycards? If not, could you please tell me how I go about that? Many thanks
How do I make a request for an official duolingo japanese course deck? I think it would be extremely helpful, especially with all the different pronunciations of the various kanji.
An official deck would be nice because it would match the course, I wouldn't have to worry about user-created errors, and the xp is a great motivator.
I really hope this message reaches you!
Kind regards, Serena
I used to get points on tiny cards but it suddenly quit giving me points. Anyone know why?
it's happening to me too, are they maybe fixing something? i'd like to know also
Tinycards are constantly being developed. Xp earning in Tinycards was introduced in the time when leagues were absent. Now they are experimenting xp earning again with leagues.
This doesn't seem to work anymore, so sad indeed. Is there a reason why?
Disappointed Tinycards no longer gives me XP, XP was the motivation I needed to review every day along with my Duolingo lessons, I haven’t used the Tinycards since the points were dropped, now just using the completed Duolingo lessons for review cuz the XP is the motivation for me. Please bring back Tinycards XP!
I'm getting 5 XP per lesson, and I'd say it's a fair amount! All I would say is I think there should be -1 XP every two wrong questions. (Minimum of 1 XP)
As someone else made a thread about, it is so inspiring to see people whose native language isn't English being able to converse with us. Thank you for that.
Great idea! I was using Tinycards for German, and I will go back to them soon.
Purely by chance I decided today to start a review of my completed tinycard decks as some of them had decayed and I was getting a bit bogged down with all the verb lessons I was doing on the main duolingo site and decided some review was needed.
I was delighted to see that the tinycard deck lessons were now giving xp, but in my opinion 5xp per tinycard lesson was probably a bit too generous, 1 or 2xp per lesson would probably be more appropriate. Just completing about half a dozen tinycard deck subjects netted me about 200xp, which seems too much in my mind.
My only other comment is that would it be possible to make the continue button at the completion of the tinycard lesson clearable by pressing the return key on the web version? At the moment the only way of clearing it is to click it with the mouse which means having to take a hand off the keyboard to use the mouse. Being able to continue with both hands on the keyboard would be much more convenient I feel.
Nevertheless, many thanks for your continued improvement of the duolingo learning experience!
I also noticed lack of pressing pressing enter to continue. In Tinycards this would be very useful because most cards are only quicly reviewed making progressing decks to decks fast.
Hello! XP earned in Tinycards counts towards your streak in Duolingo. For example, if your daily goal is 20XP, you can keep your streak going as long as you reach 20XP through any combination of activity in Duolingo or in Tinycards.
What I meant was that I assume that there is some kind of syncing going on (just like when doing lessons on mobile) and that will probably fail sometimes causing people to think they have done their quota for the day while the system thinks they have not. We'll see.
I was surprised and delighted to see that I was suddenly earning XP's for French tiny card practice. However - they don't seem to translate onto my Duolinge site. Any suggestions?
I was surprised and delighted to see that I was suddenly earning XP's for French tiny card practice. However - they don't seem to translate onto my Duolinge site. Any suggestions?
Love it! I've always "warmed up" with Tinycards before going into a duo lesson. Now I get points!
Not sure if the system changed, but today I am not getting XP for TinyCards practice, either the web version, or the Android. Is yours working today?
Thanks - funny that when the functionality came back on again, my score jumped up to reflect the TinyCards work I had just completed :)
I don't have this! :(
Is this no longer working? I did get it for a week or so but now I can't seem to get the XP credit again. Someone please help. I tried loging in and out and switched browsers but it's not giving me credit.
Hello, do you have any news about this topic on ios? It would be super useful :)
Using Android, I earn XP with Tinycards "Spanish Course", "Spanish Stories" and "Spanish Travel Basics", but not with "Basic Spanish Vocabulary". Is this on purpose, or will XP be earned in the future as well?
Hi, Do you earn XP with any deck? For Japanese, I'm using the deck "Every Katakana" by "inaba.tewi" and I don't think I'm getting any XP.
Does only the official decks give XP?
Ah, now I see... the Tinycard set "Spanish Basic Vocabulary" does not have the Duo symbol. Thank you for the clarification!
It's only on Web and Android as per the title of this discussion. Hopefully soon it'll be on iOS too!
Understood but the OP says "web and Android users first, then to iOS users soon after that." over 9 months ago. And a subsequent post says "We also plan to bring this feature to iOS sometime in the next couple months." Couple < 9.
That's true; maybe it'll take a "couple" more months, but in the meantime, you can keep learning Swedish and dozens of other languages for free!
This is fantastic. As an aside: one aspect of Tinycards (and Duolingo) that I always felt was lacking, was a way to focus specifically on the words or phrases I continually get wrong. Is there some way of doing this? Is it already built in and am I just not realizing it?
Thanks...though to be honest this doesn’t answer my question (but I still appreciate the reply). It's baffling to me why there isn't a form of practice that focuses solely on my failed words/phrases. Having me practice words I’ve already mastered is practically useless. Sure, maybe there’s some algorithm that does this in the background (though I sure can’t tell), but I'd pay premium for something that could just flat out ignore words/phrases I’ve gotten right. Alas, I'll go back to writing each failed word/phrase down on paper and quizzing myself the “old fashioned” way. It’s still a phenomenal app & community; perhaps this is something that’ll be rolled out in the future. Thanks again!
TinyCards DOES that, but you should check out Clozemaster as it does it also, but with a huge bank of vocabulary words
What has happened with this feature of earning Duolingo XP points practicing Duolingo cards in Tinycards? Today it stopped and I am not getting any point for my training....
Love this idea! It seems that there's no Duolingo official Danish decks in TinyCards yet. Is it still planned on adding more language packs into tiny cards for xp? Also still planned to bring this to the iOS apps?
This is great news! Is there any way for teachers (like me) to be able to see and track our students' time and progress on Tinycards like we currently can on Duolingo? It would be awesome to be able to see what my students have done on Tinycards so that I could for example assign them a deck I've made for homework.
I have been studying the official Tinycards associated with the first and second set of stories, learning Spanish from English. My question how can i tell which stories have 'official' Tinycard decks associated with them?
Thanks for all that you and the team do with Tinycards!
All of the stories have official Tiny Cards sets except the two new sets (Now named set 1 and set 2 that appeared 3 days ago. These new sets are aimed at beginners. I know that all the others have official status because, until a few weeks ago, there were links to Tiny Cards after each story or part story. For some reason that I do not understand these links have now disappeared and I have had to make a shortcut on my browser that links to all the cards. This is annoying because you have to scroll through all the card sets to find the right one. I have completed all stories twice and started my third time. I still learn a lot every day (I must be a slow learner:). I hope the Tiny card links return soon.
Any update on the timeline for xp support for the iOS app? I am really enjoying using tinycards in conjunction with Duolingo. I've been using the web app because I can actually earn xp there, but I would prefer to use the standalone app.
Is the IOS tinycard app going to be updated to give XP credit. I have the app on my IPAD and it does not seem to be giving me XP credit, has it not been changed yet or am I doing something wrong . The app on my android does seem to give me credit. Very disappointed in the duolingo apps on IOS, both the douoling app itself and the tinycards app. They are inferior to the andriod apps and the website.
I describe myself as not being self-motivated. I have books but its the accountability and point system that encourage me to get on and learn. I was doing well here until the tournaments came into play. Then it became "okay, gotta get points, no time to learn because that is slower and why on earth are people earning hundreds a day?!" Seeing people racking up 500+ points a day actually discourages me from trying. If I could close that off so it isn't up there taunting me, that would be nice. As far as Tinycards... I think that earning XP from tinycards is more beneficial than tournaments. If they were actually cut to benefit the tournaments, that is super backwards. Regardless of my opinion on the tournaments though, Duolingo is a personal experience and even if you only earn XP but that doesn't count toward the tournament, it would be better than nothing. Or only earn XP on decks without the bar currently filled so you can't game it. Anything is better than nothing, and nothing is bad. Point being, there are means of mitigating or solving the problem, but simply cutting something that users appreciate, without warning, announcement, explanation, or consideration is the worst decision. I hope that this will be fixed.
I miss the EP being given for Tiny Cards associated with stories, but mostly I miss the direct link at the bottom of story to take me to the Tiny Card associated with the story. My wish would be that Dúo would add the link “Go to Tiny Card” associated with the story to make it easier to find the link.
