Two ways to say dog - "perro"?!

Hello all,

I probably sound like an idiot but I know you can say "gato" or "gata" in Spanish depending on a cats gender. Does this apply to all animals and specifically to dogs? Can "perro" also be "Perra"?

Thank you

"Perra" means "bitch", both literal and figurative. Many domestic animals have different forms depending on sex. Some of them change vowels or sounds: perro, gato, pato, gallo/gallina, burro, ganso, pavo, chancho, chivo. Other animals have specific words: caballo/yegua, oveja/carnero, vaca/toro.

I did a search and yes, there is a way to say female dog: el perro (m), la perra (f) . Also, not every animal has a different version based on gender.

Edit: removed my response on the gender of horse thanks to Chilotin.

You are right ;-). And as an anecdotical thing, 'caballa' means mackerel

Horse is "caballo", but mare is "yegua". Both languages have special words for different sexs of horses.

You can also add -ito or -ita to make it sound more friendly: perrito and perrita. Puppy is cachorro (which means just dog in Portuguese).

"el perro", "la perra" When the sex of an animal is unknown the masculine form is generally used.

Yes la perra does mean a female dog but be very careful using it. Perra does also mean "bitch" (because a female dog is considered a "bitch"), and generally this word can be considered vulgar.

As for other animals, yes you can if stating the gender is needed. Although some animals don't have any gender differences - like fish which are always el pez.

Yes, you can say "perra" if you are talking about a female dog, but it can also mean bitch.
