What is the function of 'a' here?

The augmentative {'a'} suffix levels-up the servitude of the mere servant to the status of slave.

Thanks. I was thinking it might just be a big servant.

The -'a' noun suffix rarely refers to just size, but rather to importance or scale. Sometimes there is also a size difference in the things of greater importance or scale, but it is that importance or scale that the suffix actually refers to, not merely the size.
