Shortcuts for Spanish

I noticed during my years of studying the Spanish that there are a lot of suffixes in Spanish that match up with suffixes in English; it makes it easier to identify/translate cognates.

For example, -ivo is like -ive (conductivo=conductive), and -idad is like -ity (conductividad=conductivity)

I know that this rule doesn't apply to every word (felicidad=happiness) but for a good amount of Spanish words it does, making it really easy to translate in the moment.

If anyone could reply with other examples of this, it would be a huge help!!

You are right about the equivalences, but some examples are about exceptions: toallita (standard diminutive) - towelette, chino/a - Chinese, anulación/vacancia/many others but not "evitanza" - avoidance.

My examples were intended to illustrate the use of the suffix in English. I wasn't paying attention to whether the Spanish equivalent used the corresponding suffix. So I guess I should have, because what I wrote was misleading.

I edited some of them. I hope that removes the problem.

There are many near equivalents because of French and Latin legacy in English. -tion = -ción, -sion = sión, -ify = ificar, -ize = -izar, -ary = -ario, -ble (adjective) = -ble, -sophy = -sofía, -logy = -logía, -ture = -tura, -duce = -ducir, etc.
