Mara or farraige?

Could someone explain why you would use one over the other?

Hope I'm posting this in the right topic.

Mara is the genitive singular (and strong plural) of muir.

Muir and farraige are synonyms. Either can be used, but note that in sea names, only muir is used, e.g. Muir Mheann, Muir na hÉireann (both meaning “the Irish Sea”).
