It got banned many times because the Joseon dynasty scholars were shocked at how easy it was, and they stated that even fools could learn it in a day. So, hanja continued to be the preferred method of writing until the 1970s or so, and even then it was used alongside hangul.

"When a document written in Han-geul that criticizes the tyranny of Yonsangoon(연산군) appeared in 1504, Yonsangoon gave an order to ban learning Han-geul, to burn all the books in Han-geul and to report all the people who could use Han-geul." - http://www.korean.go.kr/eng_hangeul/supply/001.html

Also japan banned it during annexation.

https://www.viki.com/tv/1585c-tree-with-deep-roots?q=tree Knowledge is power. The elites of the Joseon dynasty wanted to maintain their position of power, and it is much easier to control a population that is illiterate. A similar situation existed for hundreds of years with the Catholic church repressing the publication of Bibles in languages other than Latin.
