Why is "dans" necessary"?

It's odd that Larousse does not mention "to kick" for the verb frapper. http://www.larousse.com/en/dictionaries/french-english/frapper/35066 Whereas, la frappe is "the kick. Apparently common usage in French Je frappe dans la balle* can be either "I hit the ball" or "I kick the ball".
