Where is coma used?

https://www.duolingo.com/George_Gibson_77

Coma is the 1st and 3rd person singular of comer in the present subjunctive, which has not been studied yet, It can also be translated into English as coma and comma. Coma does not exist in the present indicative which is all we have studied to this point.

They should accept pez

https://www.duolingo.com/arsenal09490

If I'm not mistaken, pez refers to an alive fish (like in the wild or as a pet). Pescado refers to fish as a food(usually cooked).

https://www.duolingo.com/ShaunOfTheLive

Correct. Pescado is also a past participle verb that means "fished". So the noun form is a fish that has been fished (not necessarily cooked, but caught).

This is similar to the etymology of the word "emparedado" for sandwich: it comes from the past participle verb meaning "sandwiched".

Thank you for that explanation, I never made that connection!

Hi March :). Your pero no is correct in the real world, but DL doesn't want you to change the meaning of its sentences when you translate and aunque better communicates 'even though'. As for sino vs pero, pero is used in cases like this where the first clause is positive - he does eat chicken - él come pollo pero no come pescado. Sino would be used if the first clause of the sentence were negative, ie, él no come pescado, sino pollo. Sino means more like 'rather' or 'but rather'. Hope that helps!

Wow thank you! So: -If the first part is positive: pero -If the first part is negative: sino Thanks!

Two sentences are EXACTLY the same, right down to the accents, yet it is incorrect to select both of them? How can that be?

The first time I missed this, Duo's correct answer used the subjunctive in the second part of the sentence apparently because of the use of no. This time I was marked correct even though I still did not use the subjunctive. Guidance anyone?

A correct sentence, but the subjunctive in it is implying doubt. Probably like “he eats fish even though he may not eat chicken“ or “he eats fish even though he won't possibly eat chicken“.

'However' shouldn't be used in the middle of a sentence without punctuation (it means something like 'but', but isn't used in the same way), so it wouldn't sound good. 'However' and 'even though' also mean different things. Here, 'however' would make the sentence more like '... but he doesn't eat fish.' In the example given he eats meat '... despite not eating fish.'

https://www.duolingo.com/mjac3561

It totally sounds better! that is much more proper grammar! It does need a comma after chicken, though.
