I did it! I'm finally at level 25 on French, Italian, and Portuguese. I am a native Spanish speaker and studied in the US for 2 years and a half. Now I'm ready to embark on my new adventure: German. Of course, I still need to continue studying all the other languages, but I wanted to share these accomplishments with you. Little by little my dream of becoming a polyglot becomes more of a reality.

Congrats! .....and a question if I may? What did it take you to reach level 25? I just reached leve 23 in Spanish and I am curious what it takes to get to 25. I had completed the tree, got the owl and kept the tree golden before the crown system came down which gave me level 22.

Now I completed all level 1 of the 50+ new skills and have the owl back which took me to level 23. I don't really care but I'm a little obsessive about reaching goals once they are put in front of me.

Did you complete French under the new crown system? Did you have to get to level 5 on all skills to get to 25?

Ok....that was more than one question. My apologies :-) I offer a lingot for anyone who answers my question(s). I have more than I know what to do with :-)

Congratulations! I don't know much about languages, but I have some friends who says: 1) It gets easier. Once the have learned 4-5 languages, it starts to get rather easy. (I am not even close to that point myself, unfortunately). 2) Learn Esperanto. You'll probably me able to do master it in 3 months. I mean really master it. Different research shows that mastering more languages makes languagelearning easier. They made a test. Some french schoolchildren should learn English. The made two random groups. One was taugt English from day number one. The other first was taugt Esperanto, then English. Obviuosly in the beginning the first group was best. But in less than two years (and this was just normal school lessons, so probably 4 hours a week or so) the second group was best, when you only meassured their english capabilities.

Hi! This summer I had a lot of free time. That's how I was able to finish the trees and get to level 25. I'd give each language 30-40 minutes per day. That's a little less of 2 hours everyday combining all three. Of course once I go back to school and work I won't have as much time but it doesn't matter because I want to take it slow with German.

I have to be honest with you; I did do a fair amount of testing out. I took one semester of Italian and Portuguese at the University and a year and a half of French at the French Alliance, so I didn't really feel like I was cheating. It was more of a challenge to be able to test out with the knowledge I had from my other courses. Duoling did help me to practice and test my skills and I must say I'm quite happy.

Wow brilliant! I have been trying to learn Spanish on and off for many years. This website & learning consistently every day means that I am finally learning Spanish properly. My plan after reaching 25 in Spanish is to learn German. I lived in Germany as a teenager & had German friends so I should be able to pick it up quite quickly. Then I want to learn Mandarin!

Well done! As a language enthusiast, I will advise you that the cases may scare you at first but once you get your head around them, you will be opened up to some more difficult languages like Russian or Polish which use the cases very extensively

Congratulations.. It is fun... I never thought I would be able to learn one foreign language, let alone 2 or three! My Italian and Spanish are coming along pretty well and I am happy with my progress. (Can pass an Italian B2 exam on a good day).. but, I did not stick with practicing German so I don't retain much of that one. I figure it takes me a good 2 years to get up to a level that I feel comfortable. I have a few more months of really working on Spanish (while keeping up with Italian) then it is on to French I think. What do you consider a plyglot to be? Two languages = Bilingual 3- trilingual 4 or more polylingual?

Hallo Luiz,

congrats!

The Portuguese-German course is just great.

It is for me reverse (I am a native German speaker), and would be laddering for you.

It teaches NEW vocabulary and interesting (not too short) sentences which you have not seen before in the EN-PT (forward) course!

Reverse courses are usually not a 1:1 clone of the forward course; I have no idea yet about how good PT-EN is (which also would force you into typing in the Portuguese language on a higher ratio even for lower crown L0-L2 levels) in comparison to the PT-DE course.

The Portuguese-German course had 27 "tips and notes" available.

Ich wünsche Dir weiterhin viel Erfolg bei Deiner Sprachen Polyglot Mission.

Viele Grüße aus Deutschland

For sure the PT-DE tree is longer than PT-EN.

German:

  • Skills: 72
  • Lessons: 349

English:

  • Skills: 60+3
  • Lessons: 294+8

Lexemes

PT-DE teaches 1711 lexemes whereas PT-EN only has 1440: https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/27444256

Tips and notes

  • Portuguese-English: 36
  • Portuguese-German: 27
