Tricking People Into Following You
Weird title, I know. I'm in the grips of boredom. Anyway.
Perhaps I might be reading unnecessary evil into this, but I just had someone "follow" me. I went to check their profile page, and they were only following one person (that person was not me) and they had 18 followers. I'm guessing they 'follow' people, and then just as quickly 'unfollow' the other person, which leads them to gain mass followers, because of the follow-for-follow routine.
Would anyone shine a light on why people do this? I will admit I will follow people too, and then shortly unfollow them, but not at the level that other people seem to be doing it. And I'm certainly not wanting to "trick" people. It's not just this one person, other people do it as well. Weird. Thoughts?
Haha! I remember on the tablet I pressed the follow and unfollow button ten times trying to figure out how it worked. I'm sincerely sorry for whoever was on the other side!
I don't follow-for-follow. Why should I? If someone follows me, and I don't know that person, I won't follow back.
Why all this action anyway? "Follow" means only that you can see their XP on your leaderboard. I'm not interested in all that -- saves me a lot of nerves. ;-)
I had this one person that would follow me periodically. So every week or so, I would get a message that he/she was following me. Presumably to provoke a follow.
Quite annoying to be honest. So I just issued a block to stop the spam.
Right. I don't follow-for-follow either. But some people do.
I still follow people, if only as a way of saying "I see what you're doing and I appreciate it."
I know it's a weird thing to write about. I just feel a little "cheated" I guess that someone "follows me" and then I go to their page and they're not following me at all! It just feels like they're trying to trick me. I don't know. Maybe I'm being too sensitive.
"I will admit I will follow people too, and then shortly unfollow them, but not at the level that other people seem to be doing it."
Now I am curious.. why do YOU do it?
As a rule, I only follow people with whom I have had a conversation on these boards (there may have been an exception where I have followed someone back in the beginning).
I have some people following me that I have never even seen (or noticed) on these boards. I am not sure why they do that. I don't really care about the leaderboard anyway. I study at my own pace.
Since they removed any features where we can talk with the people we follow, I don't think it matters anymore. I used to be more selective, because once upon a time we had personal feeds and we'd get spammers and stuff, but right now most people who follow me just seem like earnest people trying to learn a language so I see no reason why I should be a snob about following them back.
Probably to make themselves look popular. I saw that behavior a lot on Twitter.
That's really weird, It hasent happend to me and hopefully won't anytime soon, I just relized there was a fourm system on here so I'm expecting people to at least see my account. Hopefully there won't be any bothers, I don't mind friends or followerd but I don't want to be spammed by unfollows and follows.
I've noticed the same. There would be people starting threads on facebook groups asking for usernames to follow and that they'd follow back. I later notice that they no longer followed me, and only followed 0 or 1 person. So I just removed them. What's the point of doing this anyway?
Lol, that's my question. I don't know, and it seems like the people in this discussion don't know either. :P I guess they do it for fun/to gain popularity. Silly waste of time in my opinion.
I wouldn't read too much into it. I've accidentally clicked the button on someone I didn't want to follow before. There are times I'm sure it was deliberate (remember DonaldKron?) but even if they are fishing for follows... shrug I just won't give them one. Not that I follow the overwhelming majority of my thousand followers anyway.
I have noticed that the same user would follow and unfollow me multiple times. I assumed, much like in your situation, that they were trying to get me to follow them. I'm pretty selective on who I follow (not that being selective has much significance), thus I don't follow people unless I have had a previous interaction with them and we are on good terms. So, I was confused why so many random users keep following and unfollowing me. Sometimes, I would give in and follow back because I get notifications on my Kindle, and I have no idea how to turn them off. It is pretty annoying, but people will be people, I suppose. ^ ^
Also, I know this is irrelevant, but I have been trying to contact you recently through the forums. However, without the activity streams, it makes what I am going to ask you pretty difficult. The last time I asked this, it was here in response to your comment ending with "Anyone disagree?" (https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/28165274) I wish there was a better way to contact people here, but we just don't have that, so I'll settle for this.
I am apart of a Discord server that is not very open to many people. We only invite people who are on Duolingo and we are selective of who we invite. Basically, it is a server where we practice a variety of languages with each, along with discussing culture. We also just discuss whatever we have on our minds. As a member, I have discovered that my time spent there is extremely valuable, and I have learned so much about other cultures through that server. We have natives of many languages that help answer questions, and I have enjoyed communicating with them. It's a nice, welcoming place, and we thought you had very pleasing qualities that fit who we want. In fact, I was the one who suggested you!
Would you like to join this server? If so, you can post your ID and # here, if you have an account. If you don’t and you want to join, you can create one and give me the information mentioned before.
Just know that you don't have to say yes. I personally would not be offended if you declined (I was actually thinking about it when I was first invited). But, if you're interested, just think about it! You can delete your info if you decide you want to join afterwards.
Anyways, have a wonderful day!
Oh, great! I got your information through my email notifications, so I will send you the invite! (You were actually someone we were heavily considering, but we thought you were too busy to join other servers.)
You may have to allow friend requests, as that is the only way I can send you the invite.
By the way, due to recent events I will be much more active on Discord.
I'll accept your FR (or enable FRs if I have them disabled for whatever reason.)
Edit: I've reenabled FRs. You can send an FR now.
Edit: I forgot my ID. Woops. It's tsu#5757.
I sent it! You may delete your information just for security reasons. ^ ^
Sorry for the late reply, I had errands to do!
Hi, MasterZsword! Thank you for your comment and your invite! I'm not actually that familiar with Discord, can you tell me a little bit more about it? Who's in it? Any usernames I'm familiar with?
Hm... I don't really know who you would know. There are users such as gamekkeut, Nuno, testmoogle, Lauriana, CarlosLM, Myarexa, Jules, FieryCat, Keith_APP, and more, some of which are pretty vocal in the forums. We only have around 30 members, and there's always a good amount that are active on the server daily.
I'm new to the site too, so I don't really know how to explain it. I suppose it's a place where a person can create a group called a "server" and can invite people to it. The server contains "channels" that are specific to certain topics, in our case they are categorized by different languages and general topics, for the most part. To me, it's sort of a replacement for the Activity streams. ^ ^
Up until last week I have not followed anyone. No point for me, I have no interest for leader boards or even "chatting" if that became available or even getting the friend badge. I am satisfied with just getting acquainted with people in these Discussions.
BTW, I followed Luis just on a whim. Well over 31,000 people have followed him and I expected much more out of the millions who use this. And I will eventually unfollow him when the whim strikes.
It sounds like that is exactly what they are doing but why they would is a mystery. You don’t get anything for having followers and if you did have a bunch of follows and did follow people you would look like a not nice person. I’m going to have to do a check of balancing my followers versus who a follow. I really don’t understand what the point is unless you had real life friends also on here
