Anyone know what the distinction is between boat (boti) and ship (meli)? Just curious

From the Oxford Swahili dictionary

boti : chombo kidogo cha kusafiria majini k.v. ziwa au bahari.
( = a small vessel for travelling on water such as a lake or the ocean)

meli : chombo kikubwa cha baharini kilichoundwa kwa chuma cha pua na kinachokwenda kwa injini.
(= a large ocean-going vessel made from steel and propelled by an engine)

There's also:

mashua : chombo cha majini kilichotengenezwa kwa mbao au plastiki na kuendeshwa kwa makasia, tanga au mashine na kupakia watu au mizigo.
(= water vessel made of wood or plastic and propelled by paddles, a sail or a motor transporting people or cargo)

mtumbwi : chombo kilichotengenezwa kutokana na gogo la mti au magome ambacho kina shimo na hakina mkuku lakini kina tezi na omo kama mashua.
(= vessel made from the trunk of a tree or bark which has a hole and doesn't have a keel but has a stern and a bow like a mashua)
