I always thought that il cucchiaio referred to tablespoon and il cucchiaino refers to a teaspoon.. . In Italy they also have the tiny coffee spoons which are also cucchiaini . . no? Please explain. Thanks

Yes, I think your right. But "cucchiaio" also is just the general word for a spoon (not describing a specific size/type.)
