Tips for new Korean learners!

안녕!!

I, myself, am quite new to learning Korean with Duolingo, but I want to share some of the things I have learned that have helped me so far.

  1. Take it slow. If you complete three/four/five lessons in an hour, you are going to forget the things you learned!

  2. Practice after. Once you have completed the lesson I would recommend going over it again. Write out the phrases or symbols on a piece of paper and if you can't write it out again without looking at the answer, practice again!

  3. Ask. If you are having trouble with the alphabet or certain words, put up a post on the Discussion page. You will most likely find people who have experience with your particular problem or people in the same situation.

  4. Listen to K-pop :P (I have mentioned this many times XD) Trust me, it works!!!

  5. Get gold Levels on your past lessons before you go onto the next section.

고맙습니다 for reading! I (j)hope I helped! (I am cheesy I know XD)

Tell me if:

You liked my post :]

If I should change anything

I should stop making BTS references XD

  1. Listen to K-pop :P

Just regarding this: People do not speak like they sing. It's beneficial to not just listen to Kpop, but to watch shows as well. People always recommend drama, but if you don't like drama there are a multitude of youtube channels that also cover content in Korean. Netflix TV Shows have subtitles in Korean as well. You can use Viki or Vicki(?) to watch shows with subtitles as well.

  1. Practice after. Once you have completed the lesson I would recommend going over it again. Write out the phrases{...}

I recommend studying the grammar that goes into constructing a phrase instead of whole phrases. Things like hello, goodbye, how are you? - those are good enough, but are you going to memorise "I ate some rice for dinner"? Or do you want to learn how to say this yourself? Learn how to replace dinner, rice and even I with other people, things, and times?

This is where Duolingo fails in that if you use the app mobile-only, you don't have access to the tips and hints. The hints provided by the dedicated team are not sufficient enough to understand everything. Therefore, you shouldn't just use only Duolingo as your learning resource.

really helpful post! i am also just starting to learn korean. mostly because i love kpop and i'd love to be able to understand what's being said in interviews and in songs, but also because i've always wanted to learn another language! so why not learn one that is tied to my current biggest interest?

i've found that just because i finish a level does not mean i'm ready to move onto the next. i'm giving myself some structure where i don't move on until i know for sure i've got down what i just learned! if not, i'm going to get overwhelmed when i start learning new things and if i get overwhelmed i'll be more likely to quit and i do not want that! taking it slow is helpful and actually writing notes and practicing outside of your pc and/or mobile device can be extremely beneficial. another tip is to be patient with yourself. if you're learning a language that is completely different from your native one, it's obviously going to be difficult to teach yourself something so foreign (literally) and new. if you start to get frustrated because you just can't seem to get it, go easy on yourself and continue to practice. you'll get there!

so yes, love your post! don't change anything, and never stop making bts references!!! <3

Korean is part of why Timed Practice needs to return to how Duolingo does stuff... or at least the old degrading skill strength system.

In my case kpop does not do much for me. There is just a sufficiently large population of Korean speakers where I am, and I want to stop making myself look like an ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ in front of them. That... and weird awkward stuff that has my artwork and social media somehow show up on Korean areas of the Internet.

So yeah... my motivations are... yeah... I mostly just want to figure out why Koreans are pointing and laughing at me... it is prolly my own stupidity.

Hello, I'm new here and you are so right about doing more than one lesson in a couple of hours and forgetting it. So I will take your advise about writing them out, remember without seeing it and listening to KPop. Thank you very much! I want to learn Korean because Korean people are so nice and very funny. I love the culture and entertainment. Everything just seem so fascinating to me. There is another language I want to learn. But for now, I will just focus on Korean then I might learn another language at the same time or after Korean. Make BTS reference all you want. ARMY here!

I am not a Korean native speaker but I studied for over 4 years at a college level, and worked there for some time and also visited over 6 times, and scored advanced on the DLPT test for Korean, so if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask, if you can't get answers from a native :) it would help me too. I have got the golden owl in korean I am just trying to fill everything to level 5. about half way thorugh now!

Pues esta bien. El idioma coreano te mete más a la cultura del país, pero no todo es consumir k-pop, sino, investigar un poco más sobre la cultura, historia, origen y tambien esta bien escuchar un poco de k-pop (si ayuda algo xD)

I'm not new. I'm returning to Korean after a long gap from 평화봉사단 in 1968. When I and the others in my group arrived in Korea, the big pop song was 노란 씨쓰.

As I say we weren't military, nor were we CIA as the North accused us of, but we were there for the Pueblo wishing to paean the entire North Korean people, and for the North Korean assassination team that tried to get to President Park Chung Hee, but only succeeded in fragging a friend of a friend of mine on a bus as they were about to be arrested.

Also, I play 바둑 (game) and 가야금 (musical instrument). I won a prize in the First Korea Herald Foreigners' Korean Music Contest, and was interviewed in Korean live on national TV. When I get myself back together, I will tell some of my stories here in Korean.

I'm starting to learn Korean because I'm an army and some videos just don't have captions, and I really want to understand. I speak Chinese and English and I was wondering if Chinese and Korean are similar in any way? (if anybody knows both languages)

August 6, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/RoseBTSarmy

I get what your saying! I watch Korean entertainment videos online but I don't know what they are saying and has no sub on some of them. That's why I want to learn so bad.

August 9, 2018

https://www.duolingo.com/ilovejin

Yeah! It's heartbreaking when your watching vlive without subs... for all I know Jin could be saying: " ilovejin on Duolingo, come to Korea! We have a ticket for you to go to our concert!" XD

:'[ I didn't get tickets

August 10, 2018

Yeah, Chinese is the source for both Korean and Japanese so it will probably be a bit easier for you to pick up vocabulary.

You should check out the history of the korean language.

Taking it slow is a good idea. I've wanted to learn it quickly and that's impossible. In ref. to K-pop - I listen to EXO, NCT, BTS, MONSTER X and GOT7 (the same songs over and over) and I have found that some of the lyrics/phrases and words are the same. I go to Google and look up the Hangul then try to use my Korean/English app for translation. Doesn't always work (the same word may have a different meaning depending on the context) but it sure is fun when it does! Am also a new VIKI member. So corny and predictable but so fun to watch. Do not stop making BTS references :D!!
