Invisible comments? (SOLVED)
Duo just sent me a message about a new comment on a discussion I follow. When last I checked, this discussion had 3 comments. Following the link, it now has zero comments, and the new comment is nowhere to be seen. Surely, this is a bug?
(I use a labtop, with Mozilla Firefox)
It could be a bug, or it could be that people have decided to delete their comments, or the comments may have been deleted by moderators or staff.
It's hard to say for sure without knowing what discussion you're talking about, unfortunately.
Thank you. The discussion in question is this one: https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/26038445
One of the comments was my own, and I certainly haven't deleted it. Duolingo may have done so, though I would be surprised: it was not offensive, nor did it link to pirated material or break any other rule I know of.
Those comments have all been deleted by a moderator or staff.
In looking at them, none of them ask a question about the sentence, nor do they help with grammar, word choice, or any other aspect of understanding the sentence. They are mostly chit-chat and therefore "clutter" in the sentence discussion.
There was one that said "XYZ should have been accepted" which does have to do with word choice -- but the sentence discussion is not the place to report oversights. There is a report button for that.
Moderators and staff work very hard, believe it or not, to try to keep the sentence discussions free of clutter so that learners can read through them and see if their question has been asked and answered.
EDIT: I forgot to mention that the reason you got an email is because someone made a new comment in that discussion in the last 24 hours but it has since been deleted by a moderator or staff.
I bet it was deleted by the Dutch moderators. I have heard they are very strict about comments.
Clearly, it must have been. I did not have that impression before, but Lrtward's explanation above certainly fits.
