Lost my nearly-1300-day streak... glitch?

I am so frustrated right now. After diligently doing my Duolingo lessons every single day, I log in this morning and (a) I apparently have to rebuy a streak freeze, which I find strange since I didn't use mine, and (b) when I go to the lessons page, my streak (which was nearly at 1300) was ZERO. :-O

There's no way I lost my streak of my own doing. I've been doing Duolingo lessons every day. My streak was there last night, and I completed my lesson (well before midnight). Has anyone else experienced this? I sent in a feedback report, but just wondering if this has happened to any of you?

(and yes, I know language learning is not about the streak, and I will be continuing doing my lessons regardless... however, I happen to enjoy the gamification aspect to Duolingo, and I enjoy trying to maintain my streak)

Does not sound to me like you are using the www.duolingo.com web portal!!

  • What app are you using? Android? IOS?
  • What are your timezone settings? Are you using the correct ones?
  • Have you installed any app updates the last days?

The app could be broken as several users have suddenly timezone problems.

I got the notifications on the web portal. However, I normally do my lessons on my Android phone. I don't have the notifications on my phone. I've used the same timezone since I started Duolingo. The app automatically updates, and it says it's fully updated in the app store.

Duo seems to get to everyone's problems (albeit not immediately). I recommend you keep going as you are. Pretty soon they will fix and restore your streak. Have some faith... and I do feel your pain. Your 1300 days is a matter of well-earned pride!

It doesn't make sense and is totally broken: Watching your https://duome.eu/niamhwitch, there's written Last Streak: 1278 · lost 2 days ago · available for repair - So the last time you seem to have done something must have been on Sunday since today is Tuesday. But if you then look down, the graph clearly shows that you did approx. 30 XP on Monday (hence you cannot lose your streak). And if you look further down, there's also written 05.08.2018 ······ niamhwitch lost a 1278 days streak 2 days ago and 02.08.2018 ······ niamhwitch lost a 1273 days streak 5 days ago, but if you had lost your streak on August 2nd, which you hadn't, you could not have lost it again 3 days later.

Conclusion: The data doesn't make sense at all, it's totally broken and I'm really sorry that you lost your streak because of broken mechanics :-( Just keep on doing your exercises and I hope that it will be somehow fixed, although people almost never get an answer when they submit a bug report.

Had you been traveling and changing timezones in the last days by any chance? If not, I would try to email Duolingo directly and see if they can help...

No dip at all. It shows that I've done my lesson every day. I'm a stay-at-home-mom and spend all day every day at my house pretty much, lol. I have emailed them, sent a bug report, left a review for them on the app, posted here about it, posted on my Facebook about it, I'm about to tweet them, etc etc. I also have no option to repair the streak and no option to get Duolingo Plus. :-(

You can usually repair it on the Android mobile app if you visit the lingot store (there is no popup message like it is being said for the IOS app).

However, you need to be in the right A/B group for the "_streak_repair" Android or IOS experiments.

You won't get the option on the web portal as you have to pay with real money and this is AFAIK only available with the Apple or Google Play store.

This also doesn't make sense: If you lost your streak because you didn't practice, why does the "double or nothing" feature still shows "Day 1 of7"? If you really lost your streak, this should have been over and you had to buy a new wager.

After I did my lesson last night (Tuesday), my stats on that duome site changed. Before, it showed that I clearly earned about 30pts on Monday... after I completed my Tuesday lessons, it now has Monday skipped (as if I missed my Monday lesson, which I didn't). I wish I had screenshot that when it said I did Monday's lesson...

Still no response from Duolingo about this. You'd think they would at least address my issue where I can't even buy a streak repair or Duolingo Plus. :-/ I've sent a feedback report, bug report, tweeted at them, messaged them on Facebook, posted here about it, posted in the Facebook group about this, etc etc. Not a peep from them. :-/

It's unfortunately a normal behavior by them and one of the reasons I stopped volunteering for them last year.

I made a screenshot though. Now it shows your progress, but not on Tuesday:

But it still doesn't make sense if you compare the graph with everything written down below... So frustrating to lose the streak because of such stupid glitches.

What is the concrete XP on Saturday (2 days ago)? 0XP or more?

The duome.eu graph heavily depends on the current timezone setting from the user who views it! (myself I am on CET / GMT+2).

5 days ago: The bar graph does not look like 0XP, so their system is broken?!?


I think that Niamhwitch probably runs into the same problem as other users (according to Troubleshooting threads) that their timezones suddenly change and end several hours before 23:59:59pm.
I read from one user that his TZ changed to end around ~12:00-02:00pm (I can not remember 1000%).

That really sucks! I have been wondering when/if this happens. I am proud of my streak and it certainly keeps me motivated to come back to Duo and keep it going. I hope Duo fixes this issue.

Yes this happened to me too. I would be frustrated to if I had a streak like that for years too. I emailed support and they didn't do anything about it but in your case I really hope they do repair you streak because to lose a streak like that really cuts ones momentum into shreds for some people...

I really hope they fix it. I've seen people here whose streaks were restored within a day or two. So, be positive. Don't forget to post when it is restored. We will get to smile the smile of happiness too :)

Just to to let you know:

This happened because you restarted your streak (new active streak) and it obviously reached the 2 days mark when I checked your offical Duolingo profile last time.

So you got 2 x 10 = 20XP which got this process running....

At one point (we - the community - can only speculate as it is not 100% transparent) the "eligible" variable for the last streak repair is switched to FALSE.

If you do not RESTART a streak (no new XPs, still 0day) it could be that the "eligible" variable will stay TRUE for more than only 2 days, e.g ~5 days.

I believe we have seen previous Troubleshooting threads from users were the "streak repair" was deactivated around ~5-8 days (with 0 or 1 day streak, 0-10XP).

It definitely switches reaching some concrete defined deadlines...but only the app developers can tell you 1000% how they implemented this "display streak repair item" feature.

I probably should have written this before to you much quicker, but as you had already told us that you can not even access the "streak repair" feature on the Android app (probably excluded from A/B test experiment) I did not find it very important to do so in time...

Congratulations for fighting your long streak back....I would have tried the same!

Looks like my decision to take this to Reddit was the right one! Luis Von Ahn responded and assured me that they will get this fixed. About an hour later, my streak was back! Big Smiles! I still don't have the ability to buy Duo Plus, but at least my streak is back! Thank you, Luis!

I still don't have the ability to buy Duo Plus

Be warned:
The OFFLINE feature may not be 100% stable, could corrupt your local Android data and may not 1000% sync reliable back.

You need to sync back successfully DAILY before 23:59:59pm to the online server!

More problems about sound, updates, offline, Plus, etc. are usually known from Troubleshooting threads (even in 2017) to the IOS app plattform...maybe the Android app works better (my personal feeling is it is also going downhill because of removed Landscape mode, changed club functions,...)

Some weeks or months ago I had quickly re-tested the Android app and the FREE "10 lesson OFFLINE cache mode" on the KOPlayer Android emulator software.

At least the app did not crash, I could restart it succesfully and all 10 lessons across 1-2 skills have been synced back successfully to the online server...this will heavily depend on the app versions and maybe new introduced bugs in more recent versions....

It also happened to me with my 1247 streak :( the streak freeze seems not to work with high streaks.
