Is this referring to the break up of a single-sex relationship or can 他们 be used for male and female couples? If it is the latter, can 她们 also be used in this way?

他们 can refer to two men or a man and a woman. 她们 is used if it's two women

上个月 - last month; 一个月前 - a month ago.
