Duolingo tlhIngan Hol "Tinycard"'s

jupwI' / My friends,

For the past several months, starting from the early days of the Duolingo Klingon course, I have been creating decks of Tinycards while proceeding through the lessons. Personally, I have found the cards very useful in remembering the largely unfamiliar vocabulary, and since they seem to have been attracting other users (over 300 at last count), others are apparently finding them useful as well.

Now that I am fast approaching the end of the course, I think that this project has reached a sufficiently advanced stage for an announcement here in the Klingon forum and a list of links to the various decks for anyone interested in trying them out (or using them as a base to create their own decks).

I have tried to respect certain design principles -- mostly to minimise typing. Each set is around 50 cards, which I have found to be a good length. Klingon verbs which correspond to English verbs (as opposed to English adjectives) are generally presented in their third-person singular form (so Sup is presented as "jumps"). Inflected forms are generally left out, so I include vong (hypnotises) but exclude vongwI' (hypnotist). Proper nouns or Klingon-specific words with no English equivalent (like wo'rIv or sargh) are excluded. Each word is assigned one meaning, typically the one that appears most often in Duolingo; I don't put multiple meanings on a single card separated by commas, slashes or parentheses. Words with multiple, completely different meanings that appear in the same Duolingo unit (like SoQ, which means "a speech" or "to be closed"), are excluded.

So here are decks:

Duolingo Klingon 19 (Rows 35-36): https://tiny.cards/decks/9Zdeb9R1/duolingo-klingon-19

I also created an additional deck to drill the verb prefixes, all based on the verb yaj:

Duolingo Klingon - Verb Prefixes: https://tiny.cards/decks/6fFfF6KM/duolingo-klingon-verb-prefixes

My decks do not include the numbers 0-10, since another user has created a deck devoted to them which I used and found effective:

Update (2019/11/17): New Decks for Klingon Proverbs

As part of my preparation for the Level III KLI exam, I have created six new sets of cards that review all the proverbs in The Klingon Way. Each set has between 25-30 proverbs.

TKW Klingon Proverbs 1 (pp 1-34): https://tiny.cards/decks/PNPqg3Ck/tkw-klingon-proverbs-1
TKW Klingon Proverbs 2 (pp 35-63): https://tiny.cards/decks/PQ6igqGR/tkw-klingon-proverbs-2
TKW Klingon Proverbs 3 (pp 65-97): https://tiny.cards/decks/PQTK9Ez2/tkw-klingon-proverbs-3
TKW Klingon Proverbs 4 (pp 99-139): https://tiny.cards/decks/PQwJSnkJ/tkw-klingon-proverbs-4
TKW Klingon Proverbs 5 (pp 141-179): https://tiny.cards/decks/PRMexxHr/tkw-klingon-proverbs-5
TKW Klingon Proverbs 6 (pp 181-213): https://tiny.cards/decks/PpvYNUu6/tkw-klingon-proverbs-6

Update (2019/11/29): New Deck for Klingon Idioms

The syllabus for the Level III KLI exam also includes Klingon for the Galactic Traveler:

Mike. It's a fantastic learning experience that you've created. I've only done the very first set, but I can tell that I'll enjoy working through all of them. Congratulations, and thanks.

Thank you for these, I'm using them to help memorizing words. But I noticed one typo: In card group 5 subgroup 4, Tail -> thluQ should be "tlhuQ".

Also, I noticed that you are using British spelling conventions, which is a bit inconvenient, as the course uses American english conventions, i.e. Honour <-> Honor, -ise vs. -ize
Not a deal breaker of course, and completely your choice, but I get more errors than it needs because of this.

@mike-lima: qatlhlo'! tlhuQ echletHom vItI'ta'. / Thanks! I have repaired the tlhuQ card.

I take your point about American spellings; I originally created the cards for myself so I used the spelling that I am most used to. I could enable the "allow typos" mode for each set which would result in the American spellings being accepted, but it would also result in lots of incorrect Klingon answers being accepted. I think the better solution may be to simply to use the "I was right" feature whenever TinyCards objects to the American spelling.

Thanks for feedback! Qapla' batlh je!

I started learning Klingon but then I realized that I didn't have time to learn that along with the 2 other languages I'm currently studying. However, whenever my life calms down, I will set aside time and use your wonderful resources. Grazie, and Live Long and Prosper!

may'Iq, I hear you have created a new "Proverbs" deck. I haven't searched it out yet. But perhaps you could edit this to include a link to that deck.
