Finished! 568 Crowns in Spanish

I really hated the crown system at first, but it really became enjoyable when they added the "test out" feature, and I could move along at a faster clip.

I will say that a couple of the skills at the bottom of the tree were really tough. I'll need to go back and practice a lot, particularly with the subjunctive imperfect, but I got through it all, and learned a lot, and I'm excited to move on to the reverse tree, and to spend more time on the stories and podcasts.

Thanks for a great experience, Duolingo. It hasn't been without frustrations, but I do appreciate the resource very much, and all the dedicated people that make it work, and work to make it better.

And yesterday, I went to a local Mexican restaurant to buy tamales, and had about a 10 minute conversation in Spanish with the clerk, without missing a beat. I understood her, she understood me, and there was not a single, "'¿Qué?" It was really fun, and it really motivated me.

Bien hecho!

I'm curious: How much of a detour was the new Spanish tree for you? When it was first introduced, there was a lot of complaining on the forums about lost owls and boring repetition. What's your perspective from the finish line?

For myself, it HAS been an effort to get all the new modules up to speed, but I've also been learning a LOT of new vocabulary and usage, which makes it all worthwhile. So count me as a fan of the new tree. I've got almost all the new material up to 2 crowns, and by the end of the year all the new stuff should be at 3 crowns. Then I can resume my quest for crowns 4 and 5 all around.

(I also can't complain about the opportunity to rack up a bunch of easy XPs and reach level 25.)

The new system seems silly. I don't need XPs and Crowns, I need to learn a language and the new tree, while adding valuable content, took away from actual learning and made it about silly stuff. SAD :(

Much like yourself I'm personally not that motivated by XP, however for each person that doesn't like it there's sure to be one that does. I'm kind of speaking for her here, but my wife has stated that it's the XP and gamification (e.g. streaks and crowns) that has actually kept her engaged in her language learning. She's a gamer at heart but can find traditional study methods somewhat boring. The new format has made it fun for her and enabled her to be more consistent and achieve much more than she probably would have done otherwise.

That's exactly how I am. I've always struggled to stay on track with my studies, but with the crowns and xp, the motivation is a big help. Besides, even if you don't like it, can't just keep it to yourself?

Your English is excellent. I probably can't even translate that to Spanish yet. Hopefully one day I will be able to.

I had only been learning Spanish for a couple of month, when this new Crown system appeared. Since I wasn't too far along, I started from scratch to get 5 Crowns for each level. It was kind of fun to see that I had actually learned quite a bit in a short time. Love Spanish!!

The new system has a lot of great additions but also makes it really senseless in combining the progress we've already made, with things we actually need to practice. We basically have to redo all lessons to get to where we had already progressed. It's really an overall silly and frustrating update!!!

I've been using DuoLingo for a few years now and it's a little disappointing and discouraging to have to basically redo all the lessons I had already passed. It's good to re practice things I've already learned but it really makes it extremely redundant and discourages me from using the app :( :( :(

Even if you restart the class and delete all progress and begin anew and do the Placement Test, the placement test, even with perfect responses gives you a Level 1 and not much access to new lessons.

Why???? It's lame and discourages actual learning when the focus is on Crowns and Lingots and not actual language comprehension. Sad.

Are you aware that you can test out of higher levels, too? You can only test out of one level at a time, but if your knowledge level for a certain module is, say, level 4, then you can get there by passing four tests.

I have a personal rule that for the new Spanish modules I do at least 1/4 of the lessons at each level before testing out of the rest. There's always new content, even for "easy" topics. But of course your mileage may vary.

I just completed my Five Crown Spanish Tree too. I’ll continue with the practice for review each day, but I’m going to devote more time to other avenues to improve my Spanish. I am eight years into living in Mexico.

Before the crowns, I was really getting into Synergy Spanish Bola Nieve and Advanced Concepts Intensive. I’ll get back to the Intensive and start working with the Listening Skills with some seriousness. TV documentaries in Spanish are another source I continue to use.

I did the original reverse tree years back and have no desire to play it again as a crown game.

Arent you lucky that you can go down to the local food store and test your spanish I live in the repulic of south africa and no such luck I am most pleased for you. However do your know how many crowns it is possible to acheive and how many xps is needed to go up to 568 from 567. I ask because I have done a lot of work on level 567 and am finding going up and down the tree quite tedious in fact pretty boring not at all inspiring because it is so repetitive on and on the same old stuff Anyway to you well done! For getting thus far and I too really appreciate how far duolingo has brought me in 508 from not knowing a single wordword of spanish to a rather vast vocabulary. And Quite a lot of grammer rules which I certainly hope will work in a real live one on one conversation. I kinda feel cinfident that I could have an adequate conversation but have yet to be in the circumstance . Anyway I have over three thousand lingots which I guess I will never be able to use so id like to give some to you because of your obvious enthusiam so feel free to pass them on if you too have lot . Easy come easy go Sigue asi! bien hecho! I hope that this makes sense to you ¡destaque en lugar de encajar ! Muy bien I stopped at 9 lingots for you because I like number 9 better than than ten because its a,prime number.
