Is this something that is actually said in Spanish? I would express the same thought by saying "I bought (or got) a new car 4 years ago."

Not really. A Spanish speaker would say "Cambié de carro hace cuatro años", it would mean you got rid of your old car and got a new one.

Changed it into what? This is an awkward sentence.

I've never heard this expression in English (U S). I traded... traded in... bought a new... got another... are some different ways this is expressed.

I agree. I used "I switched cars" and it was rejected.

It made me think of people who lease their cars. I have friends who change vehicles every couple years. (I am Canadian, FYI)
